kaleun -> Shame and Execration! Warspite Vs Kaleun (12/31/2004 12:17:42 AM)

How shall I describe it. The war started in the usual fashion. Allies got trounced by Japanese. Coral Sea occurred, with the result that Kaga was sunk outright, and two other CVs, whose names escape me were severely damaged; the cost, Enterprise and Lex sunk.
An attempt by Japan to land at the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean using a APD TF was thwarted by a cunningly placed BB TF that made mincepie out of the APDs.
In a bold operation, taking advantage of the temporary disconfiture of KB, Wake is retaken [X(]. While Warspite attention is concentrated in Wake, a bold strike by the Marine Raider Battalion retakes Tarawa[X(]. Finally, as enemy Carriers steam on to Tarawa, about half of the 40th Div retakes Gili.
In the Banda Sea, Timor is reinforced, using mostly Dutch troops, and some Aussie reinforcements, and a cruser TF based at Darwin conducts bold antishipping raids in the Banda Sea/ Kendari theater.

Now things start to go wrong.
A large CV force, swings by Tarawa, pounds the invasion force some, and heads for the New Guinea area. Taking advantage of this, Operation Northern Star is launched. A large BB force (Which had returned to Pearl from supporting the Tarawa operations) matches up with two prepositioned invasion TFs, and moves towards Marcus Island; no enemy air opossition is expected since there is no functioning AF at Marcus, and the death star is heading to NG.
In the NG theater, Coral Sea 2 occurs, but the allied carriers, distracted by the showing of a Clark Gable movie fail to launch, and are both turned into artificial reefs for the Australian Dive tourism industry. The Death Star remains intact!. The only carrier in the pacific is CVE Long Island. Admiral Nimitz is admitted into the Pearl Harbor Naval Hospital for a "minor" indisposition. Admiral King has to be treated for severe coffee snorting asphixia.
Northern Star finds out three things: a) Not all the Japanese carriers are at NG, b) Some of the Japanese carriers are at Marcus Island, and c) A major Japanese invasion of Wake is in progress. The Transports move to Wake and Midway where their troops are welcome reinforcements. The old BBs run smack into the enemy transports, with predictable results.
The invasion of Wake is delayed, until the japanese scramble a BB TF to smack around the old allied BBs, that return to Pearl for repairs. The Japanes attempt a landing, but are repelled by the strong allied presence in Wake. Two attempts by BBs to bombard Wake succeed, but the bombardment TFs suffer severely from the shore defences.
And that is the situation now.

So: How many VPs does warspite need to win the war in December 42?
There is a strong impeachment movement building up in Washington (and they don't have talk radio!)

Things are vewy vewy quiet. Warspite must be hunting wabbits! Question one: Where does he plan to hit next? and Number two: Can the allies carry out any minimally aggressive action? (think flea bite)

Warspite** -> RE: Shame and Execration! Warspite Vs Kaleun (1/1/2005 3:35:41 AM)

Things are quiet because at present the Japanese are preparing for 4 operations. Two operations are defencive in nature and regard the reinforcement of Kendari and Rabaul for future campaigns against Timor and Gili. The third operation is a continuation of the successful China campaign. The Chinese have moved 14-16 corps into Burma and with this weakening of their front line it was deemed advantageous to strike. Forces are moving up the Sian trail to wipe out what is left of the communist forces. This, however, is slow going.
The fourth and major offensive is going to fall on Wake. It was a huge embarrassment to the emperor that the island was retaken by the Americans and so every effort has been put into liberating it once again. The delay comes from moving up more troops for the invasion. The first attempt failed miserably and so a force containing the 4, 10, 20 and 38 divisions along with the 65 brigade and 4 tank regiment have been assembled along with supporting engineers to land simultaeously. However, the empire is short of troop transports, so we are awaiting their arrival. [>:]

Problem here is his intentions on Wake. Recon shows huge amount of shipping at Marcus, prelude to some major buildup. Recon does not show any Aps there, but recon pilots can't tell a Battleship from a Sampan anyway. Also I don't believe his majesty's last post for a minute.[8|] I am not concerned about Gili, unless he decides to come in with a very large force. So much the better for my LBA to attack.

Action heats up all of a sudden.
Operation Spotted Dog goes on as planned. The 1st Marine Division, supported by a BB bombardment force, lands on Makin and establishes a beachhead. Prior recon had shown the presence of 2nd Maizuru SNLF and 52nd Naval Guards. Air cover is supplied by a marine F4F unit, as well as Army P40s based on Tarawa. Also close air support is provided by a marine Dauntless unit.

The battle of Wake V4.0 starts. B26s from Wake attack the Japanese BB TF approaching Wake. Nells and Zeros attack naval forces in Wake. Also a carrier TF is noted approaching Wake. Will the defences hold this time? Only time will tell.

Still more action today. Heavy air attacks over PM presage action in the area. In addition the feared Betty torpedo bombers reappear in Rabaul, to the detriment of a transport TF that was resupplying Gili.

In China, comrade Mao is having some problems as we can clearly see.

And finally, a sub near Rangoon torpedoes a troop transport heading West. Now the next question, Where are these guys going?

Wake 4.0 proceeds with very heavy air attacks on Wake. The CAP however gives as good as it gets, and causes some damage. Twin engine bombers raid the Japanese TFs repeatedly, however they are directed to attack the Battleships, whom they can't hurt. They do score two hits on one of them to no effect. Of course if they scored two hits on a carrier deck, they could incapacitate the carrier, but, they would have to get through the CAP. Perhaps the Air commander is not so foolish.
