adsoul -> U.S. subs: looking for ideas (1/1/2005 8:02:07 PM)

I'm playing U.S. in PBEM game, it's now June 1942 and I'm looking for ideas about patrol areas for my long-range (Gato & Tambor classes). I'm inclined to send them against merchant shipping but what are the best areas? I mean, very specific areas (i.e. hexes South Formosa) not generical ones like SCS. Advices?

2ndACR -> RE: U.S. subs: looking for ideas (1/1/2005 8:09:25 PM)

The strait above PI and below Formosa. Beware heavy ASW there.

Basically any chokepoint is a good place. Near the islands off Palembang is another good area. That whole choke point area is a good hunting ground.

If you want to kill troops close to Japan. Going after the oil/res go for the choke points near Japan.

Yeah, PI/Formosa was my first choice, I'm leaving now due to heavy ASW (planning to go back later anyway). Off Sumatra would be a good point as well, but it's swallow waters and I don't like sending my subs where losses wil be higher [:D]

Thanks for your advice!

Everywhere along his shipping lanes! Nowhere to hide,baby. Spreads his ASW aroundas well.

Hiding? Me? Hey man, I'm from the same Country as Durand De la Penne and Valerio J. Borghese[:D] [:D] [:D]

I was referring that Japanese ships have nowhere to hide.[:D]

Opps [X(] I'm afraid I just got the gold medal for the silliest answer on the Matrix Forum 2005 [8|]

dtravel -> RE: U.S. subs: looking for ideas (1/1/2005 9:46:45 PM)

But if you're a sub, isn't the whole idea to hide? [:'(]

adsoul -> RE: U.S. subs: looking for ideas (1/1/2005 9:49:46 PM)

Oh no, WW2 Italian Sub motto was "rapidi e invisibili arrivano i sommergibili"... meaning "quick and invisible are coming the subs. Unfortunaely their structures were huge... just too big because they were something like "unvisible" [8|]

2ndACR -> RE: U.S. subs: looking for ideas (1/1/2005 10:43:55 PM)

Try playing with Ron's ASW tweaks. No need to really hide anymore from ASW TF's.

Much more realistic, but very infuriating. One of these days, Ron will either release the fix or it will be included in the mega mod.

I always loved the Italian sub mods in Silent Hunter 2. Even if they did have conning towers the size of a barn. [:D]

[:D] Well, maybe not a barn, but looks their design was conceived for parades not for real combat. So they're really slow to dive, a serious handicap in restricted waters (like the Med)

That probably explains why they look so good. Got a bit more style than a U-Boat. [;)]

adsoul -> RE: U.S. subs: looking for ideas (1/1/2005 11:22:51 PM)

Yep, but U-boat do really sink ships [:D] altough being inside one of them it's somehow awful... a claustrophobic experience at best [:'(]

janushm -> RE: U.S. subs: looking for ideas (1/2/2005 12:54:10 AM)

my major patrol points are usually.
-quality US subs patrolling off formosa/PI and japanese coast.
-dutch and brits around the DEI oil bases. chockepoints [singapore-borneo or the makassar straight]
-second class US subs [S class] early warning screen. be it near a major forward base or before my own coast. another one. the straight between malaya and sumatra. [i mostly use small AK's as picket ships but it only works where the enemy doesnt have betties in reach]
