1 - I dont like the look, I could never be absorbed by the game. Frankly the pieces remind me of monopoly - espercialy the horse in monopoly.

2- If it is hexed based it must be top down 2D. Note that "hexed based " and "isometric" do not go together.

Maybe someday a certain Publisher might make an attempt to bring back a game similar to AGE of RIFLES, but based on WWII combat situations. I believe that was 2D, it was a great game to play.

Try this Underdog link for a free download of AoR with campaign disk, 1.04 upgrade and CD cheat all in one package. Watch out for popups.

Don't know if the sound config will work or not but you can still play it without sound.

Thanks Dave Briggs:

I have the Dos based version all the campaign disks, upgrades and I downloaded years ago every scenario I could find on the net.

I still have old machines and still play it.

I guess I'm openly wishing for a modern day version that will play on XP

Talonsoft's "East Front", "West Front", and "Rising Sun" were all isometric AND hex-based.

Don't forget Matrix Game's Titans of Steel game.

The problem is that most "wargamers" are either 2D fanatics or 3D ones. If you make a game "in between" you really end up just making no one happy.

An isometric game is not going to preserve that "boardgame look" that some love. Nor is the interface likely to be quite as easy as most strickly 2D top-down games are. And the graphics are still going to look "crappy" compared to a 3D game.

So I'm not sure what the advantages would really be other than an attempt to make a sequel look different/improved without having to go full 3D.

Me, personally, I'm still trying to figure out why so many think terrain made of still too few texture filled triangles looks better than some of the highly detailed maps found in 2D games, etc.

You might try downloading this version. I'm still running a Pent III with Win98SE and the original version wouldn't run on my machine but this version does. I've heard others that are using XP say it runs on thier machines too. The thing that usually keeps it from running is the sound.config. If it won't recognize your soundcard then just choose "no sound". Better to play with no sound than not at all. And with the CD hack you can use any game CD to run the game. You don't need the AoW CD.

Thanks

I have a machine setup running Windows 3.11, it's a 486/66 with 24 meg of ram and the game runs great. I'm also running Win 3.11 on a 386/17 with 16 meg of ram for even older games.

As are virtually all of HPS Simulations' wargames.
