ORIGINAL: Danny Boy Guys, The play of the book of the film of the game.....[;)] it was all based on 'Harpoon' the classic WW3 sea/air strategy game. Check this out for more info http://edladner.home.infionline.net/hullfaq.htm Red Storm Rising...an essential read, read it 5 or 6 times now and still find the initial Russki assault on Iceland fantastic. Anyone not read it? Cheers! Actually, the game Hapoon was in existence as a US Navy officer training aid in the mid-80s. I was responsible for the maintenance on the three TRS-80 consoles that ran it for the officers on my boat, the USS ARKANSAS. I got to play it late at night...it was a referee-style simulation, with a RED and BLUE console attached to the MASTER console. The referee set up the game specs, and the players only saw what would normally have been revealed in real life. Around 1987, Larry Bond, the creator of this program, put out a miniatures rule set based on this computer simulation. He called it Harpoon; Tom Clancy, in collaboration with Bond, used the Harpoon rules to wargame the various battles in his book. At one time I owned the miniatures rules set, as well as a number of US and Soviet naval miniatures. Boy, I miss gaming in Combat Information Center while in port, using the plot table to fight WWIII!
