WiTP_Dude -> RE: I sunk the Yamato with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 8:07:18 AM)

Something doesn't add up. Who knows what really happened...

afspret -> RE: I sunk the Yamato with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 8:18:41 AM)

I know what you mean, I lost the Repulse to a single torpedo hit while it was docked at Batavia and I also barely got the Colorado back to PH after it took a single torpedo while off of Makin. But yet Zuikaku apparently took two hits from Brit Mk6 mines left at HK and its still running around with KB without suffering any effects.

A lot of people will say that the loss will be due to a magazine hit, but dang, the IJN must be pretty good to score mag hits so frequently.

Tiornu -> RE: I sunk the Yamato with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 8:50:01 AM)

The Beauforts were carrying 45cm torpedoes.
Yamato has 46cm guns.
I think I've found a way to get a magazine exposion....

Tanaka -> RE: I sunk the Yamato with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 8:59:41 AM)

odd thing is when i reloaded the turn to see the combat over again it was never touched. i thought all replays were supposed to be the same unless you change something. odd....

patrickl -> RE: I sunk the Yamato with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 9:18:35 AM)

Hi,

You have it lucky. The thing about GG's games is that the 1st turn is always special - the subsequent reloads somehow will not replicate the results again. Furthermore, reloads will make the AI less aggressive.[:)]

Is there really anything worth adding besides the smiley? Funny stuff!

Skyros -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 4:04:17 PM)

The sunk by shows the last weapon to hit the Yamato. She was obviously hit by more than one torpedo. The intelligence report underesstimated the hits.

There was a big discussion about this some time back - the consensus opinion is that the "sunk by" is the weapon that did the most damage.

I know I have bombed ships with 1000 pound bombs, crippled them, and then caught them later and finished them off with 8" shells (and they sunk in battle) - and the report will say it was "sunk by 1000 lb. bombs".

Sunk by will show one of the hits on the Yamato, not always the last or sinking one.

On the other hand, Yamato was probably hit by only one torpedo, that hit a magasine and boom. Had it not for a magasine explosion, he may survive several torpedoes hit and I doubt 9 torpedo plabes may hit her enough to sink her by cumulative damage.

No that was a lucky or unlucky hit, depending on wich side you are. Exactly what happens in war and the reason why BBs and CVs were used more carefully in real WWII than in UV.

denisonh -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 4:28:53 PM)

It is possible.

I would be more concerned if it happened all the time. I have not seen this in my current PBEM, with a BB/BC/CA sinking after a single torpedo.

Moquia -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 5:33:44 PM)

Just started a 1.4 AI game as allies. POW survived 3 aerial torpedoes plus numerous bombs the first week, very pleased with that. In this game I am trying to hold the Japanese in Malaya as long as I can, even using the British 18th division as historical (I got it relatively early).

I feel the same. The only thing I typically see die after 1 torpedo hit is a DD or MSW and then not always. The Japanese AI in my game put two sub launched torps into the Lexington, hurt her for sure but she made harbor and lived. In my game, I've never got a torp into the Yamato but an SBD squadron did claim to hit her with at least 10 1000lb bombs. All it seemed tod o with up her SYS and scrape off some of the smaller guns. Guess I'm going to need a Tallboy for that ship. [:D]

I had an UV PBEM where a TF with the Yamato was attempting a night surface interception. Another lighter Japanese TF found an Allied minefield in open sea on the way, sailed past it without loss and arrived in the planned hex, where the US CV were. It dispatched much of two surface TFs covering them but never reach the CV TF.
The Yamato TF sailing second decides to turn around the Allied minefield... by sailing in the next hex, where a (probably bigger) Japanese minefield has been laid to try to hit an US CV. Of course one ship hit one mine and the total effect was that the TF didn't arirve in time but arrive at the target hex, near Nevea, and sharing the hex with US CV, in daylight.
The number of Allied aerial sorties jumped from the usual 500/day to more than 2000, most of them directed against my BB TF. The two older BB with Yamato were quickly sunk but the Yamato survived 1 torpedo and 80 bomb bits, more than 20 of them 1000lbs bombs. At the end of the turn, it was shown in fire by reports but not heavily damaged. In fact SYS was around 15 and FLT below 10. Most AA and secondary guns were wrecked and the few remaining had no more ammo but the BB escaped at full speed and I repair her in Truk, SYS repair was done before the guns were rebuilt.

Now in WITP any hit piercing the armor may sink a ship. And I love that. The most big ship I lose to only one bomb was a CA.

RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!!

This is what I like about Witp, just like in real war you don't always know what happened! This is part the of fog of war!

What was he doing? Floating offshore on an inflatable mattress?

Richelieu -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/14/2005 9:35:33 PM)

Historically, these two Juggernauts were hardly sunk.

The Yamato took 3 waves of 380 planes, scoring 12 torpedoes and 18 1000 ib bombs before going down..
Her sister Musashi was only sunk by 19 torpedoes and 17 bombs...

Not sure that Witp will reflect this reality [8|]

HISTORICALLY, he was hit in the air with a torpedo I think...[:D]

this is true. but in the combat animation she was hit only once by a torpedo.

Nobody knows how many of those hits it took to inflict fatal damage. Just because you stick 20 torpedoes in a boat doesn't mean that it wouldn't have sunk eventually after the first one or two. At this point in the war, the American carrier TFs had a "plethora" of aircraft and often not enough seagoing targets to aim them at.

So, these junglenuts might not have been as durable as advertised.

Umm, the ships ended up on the bottom like any other sunk ship. Is "hardly sunk" sorta like "a little pregnant"?[;)]

I assume you meant "hard to sink".

Tiornu -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/15/2005 2:39:48 AM)

"HISTORICALLY, he was hit in the air with a torpedo I think."
I guess he didn't have enough bulge protection.

akdreemer -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/15/2005 9:49:11 AM)

Well not many ships can hold up to being torpedoed in the same spot twice.

Yes, I wanted to say "hard to sink". My english is quite aproximative... [:o]

DamoclesX -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/15/2005 6:46:09 PM)

Ya, I ran into it and it killed my entire convoy.

not to mention sinking 3 carriers

at this point I Decided it might be smart to maby look up some basic tactics lol

scout1 -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/15/2005 9:33:01 PM)

In one of my pbem games, I got lucky and took the Kaga down with a single 1,000 lb from an SBD. Actually, the 1,000 lb started the process. It was the long trip back from PH that they could contain the damage [:D]

marky -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/16/2005 4:35:26 AM)

lol

sounds like either sum type of insect to me...

or a lucky mag hit

are lucky mag hits modelled in WITP?

marky -> RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!! (1/16/2005 4:37:56 AM)

after all

HMS Hood was sunk by 1 hit fdrom the bismarck

a shell penetrated her deck armor, hit a cordite mag, and she became HMS Flambe

also, weak hull steel and her being overweight, made her break her back and she sank like a rock with 1400 dead and 3 survivors -

Ted Briggs
Bob Tilburn
Bill Dundess

not sure if i spelled theyre names rioght tho lol
