Grotius -> The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/18/2005 12:56:18 AM)

Maikarant and I have agreed to play the short 14-turn Coral Sea scenario. Neither of us has done a WITP PBEM before, though I do have a little experience with UV PBEM. We decided to try the shortest scenario on the theory that we might actually finish. We've both been reluctant to jump into a campaign-game PBEM for fear of the long time commitment, but this little battle might change our minds.

The settings: Allied Damage Control On; Japanese and Allied Sub Doctrine Off; Historical First Turn On; Fog of War and Weather On. I'm Japan; Maikarant has the Allies.

Good luck, Maikarant! And please, let me have your advice for where I should build my Imperial Governor's Mansion in Noumea. :)

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/18/2005 12:56:53 AM)

Hai! The Empire is on the move.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/18/2005 12:59:54 AM)

Maikarant strikes back! He catches my Zeroes on the ground in Lae (resting after their attack on Port Moresby yesterday) but fortunately only destroys a couple of them. OK, I shoulda had some up for CAP. Interestingly, his afternoon wave of attacks includes B-17s out of Port Moresby, which put some holes in my runway. The Empire will remember this insult, Maikarant-san!

My naval forces continue to move south on their inexorable journey to Sydney and Melbourne. In the meantime, I flew a lot of air search missions today but didn't spot a single American ship. Maikarant-san ran recon over Lae and Wewak; time for me to start flying some recon missions too. I can't destroy the enemy until I find him.

Already I'm remembering why PBEM is so fun: I didn't expect Maikarant to move B-17s into Port Moresby. Those big boys take a lot of supply. But in a two-week scenario, why not? I doubt he'll run out of supply before time is up, so it looks like a good move. Of course, I have other plans for New Guinea.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/19/2005 12:17:15 AM)

NOUMEA, New Caledonia (UPI, May 4, 1942) - Yesterday Japan carried out coordinated landings at four separate spots in the South Pacific. Japanese troops landed on the islands of Guadalcanal and Tulagi in the Solomon Island chain, and almost simultaneously at Buna and Gili Gili on the southeastern end of Papua New Guinea. President Roosevelt termed the landings "a grim new development in the battle for the South Pacific." Further details were not available at press time.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/19/2005 12:19:44 AM)

/bow.

The Empire's troops conducted four more or less simultaneous amphibious landings in the South Pacific yesterday, as part of the larger effort to liberate the Southeast Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere from western Imperial domination. Allied warplanes responded with a furious attack on one of the landings, at Buna. Two waves of Allied bombers and fighters descended on my liberation fleet. But a small contingent of Japanese Zeroes flying CAP managed to keep the imperialist attackers at bay -- on this day, anyway.

Meanwhile, the enemy dropped more bombs on the airfield at Lae, and he also had the temerity to bomb Fortress Rabaul at night, disturbing my beuaty sleep. Enemy planes also flew annoying recon missions over Lae and Wewak. Our air searches uncovered only one enemy ship: a submarine moving north of New Caledonia. Enemy recon has picked up a few of our ships, however.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/24/2005 4:37:22 AM)

5 May 1942: The war's first carrier battle took place today! I sent my CV CV CVL down toward Gili Gili to cover my landings there and at Buna. Although I'd been doing air search constantly, I never spotted Maikrant's carriers or any surface ships. (Incidentally, this *is* a PBEM; Maikrant just doesn't post on this forum often.) Suddenly, out of nowhere, Maikarant's CVs popped up 240 miles to the southwest -- in the Coral Sea, as befits the scenario name. Here are the results.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/24/2005 4:40:06 AM)

You'll notice that Maikarant's torpedo bombers didn't make it to me, whereas my Kates found him. The battle took place at a range of four hexes. What could he have done to either shorten the range (allowing his torpedo bombers to get their hits in) or lengthen it? If he sets Max Reaction Range to 6, will that mean his CVs will react as far as six hexes toward mine, to close the gap and allow his torpedo bombers to join the fight?

Anyway, I'm not sure if either of his CVs survived the fight; intel shows a large number of Operational Losses for his CV-based aircraft. But he got some good licks on mine too: two of the three are out of action, and one may sink tomorrow. All in all, the results roughly parallel (in a more bloody way) the actual battle of the Coral Sea -- tactical victory for Japan, but perhaps a strategic win for the Allies.

tsimmonds -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/24/2005 4:49:45 AM)

quote:

Could happen.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/24/2005 5:08:24 PM)

Hmm, he says he had Max React set to 6. Maybe he began the turn more than 4 hexes away; I'll have to ask him.

The manual (p. 63) says Max React Range is the "maximum number of hexes the TF will move when reacting to an enemy's presence." I guess the implication, as Irrelevant says, is that this movement "could" happen, not that it always will.

tsimmonds -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/24/2005 5:17:20 PM)

quote:

The manual (p. 63) says Max React Range is the "maximum number of hexes the TF will move when reacting to an enemy's presence."

I believe that whether reaction occurs depends on the aggressiveness of the OIC of the TF and a die roll.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/24/2005 7:54:33 PM)

Another question about this CV battle. The US fighters flew CAP in the morning but not in the afternoon. But the US was able to fly offensive missions in the afternoon, which suggests that at least one of his CVs was still operational. (I.e., SYS+FLT was still less than 50.) So why did no CAP fly?

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/25/2005 4:03:50 AM)

6 May 1942: If Maikrant and I do a full-map scenario, I promise not to cut-and-paste every last boring detail of every combatreport.txt file. But for this little 14-turn scenario, I figure "why not?" There's lots of carnage in this Coral Sea scenario, and it'll be over soon enough. And I'm curious whether more experienced PBEM'ers have comments. Maikarant and I are still both wondering why his CVs didn't fly CAP in the afternoon of our carrier battle, even though they did launch offensive strikes in the afternoon.

Anyway, here's the action from May 6, 1942, the day after the carrier battle. I'm still unloading supply and troops at Buna; I can doubtless hold it for this short scenario with what I've got, but I figured I might as well finish the operation. Unfortunately, I'm running out of non-fatigued fighters to fly CAP, and my CVs are retiring to Rabaul.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/25/2005 4:21:34 AM)

7 May 1942: OK, I've been unloading at Buna for days, and it's just about time to declare victory and allow my Transport TF there to retire. Almost none of my LRCAP showed up for the party today, and I paid the price. Fortunately, both his CVs are badly wounded, limping back to either PM or Australia, and I still have one healthy one with which to give chase. But for this day, I have only bad news to report.

maikarant -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/25/2005 2:34:29 PM)

[>:] You called? :)

Thanks Grotius for keeping this AAR alive, apologies for not commenting until now.

Indeed some decisions were questionable, some can be explained away somehow but the rest can be catalogued as "insufficient communication down the command chain". This is my first PBEM, and there are so many things I forgot at the beginning because I jumped right into it... [sm=dizzy.gif]

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/26/2005 12:54:26 AM)

You're doing pretty well for someone who claims to be a newb. Last I checked, the only ships officially listed as sunk are CVL Shoho and some of my smaller ships. Of course, last I checked, Lex and Yorktown had some torpedoes sticking out of their sides too. :)

This little scenario is an ideal introduction to the mechanics of PBEM and the game more generally. I recommend it to anyone who's debating whether to try a bigger PBEM scenario. If Maikarant is game for another PBEM, I will be. :)

maikarant -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/26/2005 1:19:54 AM)

Thanks :)

By the way, I just posted my next turn to you. Seeing that you're online here gives me hopes to see the next replay soon! :) And you bet that I'll be game for the next step! [:)]

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/27/2005 12:33:11 AM)

8 May 1942: The submarine war heats up; I raise the Rising Sun over Tasssarafonga; and heroic Japanese troops slosh onto the beach at Russell Island. Bad weather socks in Maikarant's air armada at Port Moresby, allowing some of my burning ships to escape Buna unscathed.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/27/2005 12:37:07 AM)

I've declassified a few screenshots documenting the history of our short little conflict. Remember, this is Scenario 3, which lasts all of two weeks, from May 1-14, 1942.

Here was the disposition of my forces on 2 May 1942. I've noted the intended path of my four amphibious assaults, plus the intended path of my CVs, whose mission was partly to help cover further unloading operations at Gili Gili and Buna but mostly to sink American CVs. They stopped and refueled at Rabaul on their way to the Coral Sea, and, mirabile dictu, they found the CVs they were looking for.

[image]http://img180.exs.cx/img180/377/may2arrows4js.jpg[/image]

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/27/2005 12:42:22 AM)

Most of the resistance was focused on Buna, as I expected. I did put up LRCAP over the invasion TF for the duration of the operation, but I still got used to seeing this combat animation every turn:

[image]http://img79.exs.cx/img79/1455/bunamay52jv.jpg[/image]

Salient -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/27/2005 12:48:10 AM)

Thanks for the AAR guys!

For beginner players like myself these things can be interesting.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/27/2005 12:55:20 AM)

Here's a shot from the combat replay of May 5, as our wounded CVs disengage and he once again bombs my forces liberating Buna:

[image]http://img52.exs.cx/img52/8404/bunamapmay56dd.jpg[/image]

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/27/2005 12:59:30 AM)

Salient: glad you're enjoying it! Maikarant is completely new to PBEM, and my only PBEM experience is with UV, so we're kinda like newbies too. After six months of playing against the AI, I have to say that PBEM has completely addicted me.

Here's a shot from the 8 May 1942 combat replay. My Betties from Rabaul are busy attacking a surface force Maikarant has sent to Woodlark Island. I've been reconning Woodlark quite consistently, and I bet that has him worried. Of course, I've also been reconning Port Moresby, Goodenough, Russell, Ndini, etc...

[image]local://upfiles/7808/Rp422961408.jpg[/image]

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/27/2005 1:09:49 AM)

Here's one oddity. This turn I inherited Tassafaronga because of the base-proximity rules. (I have Lunga, Tulagi, and am about to take Russell.) But there was a damaged squadron of Catalinas there when I inherited it. Instead of being destroyed, the Catalinas now show up on my base screen. Is this a known issue? If not, should I send someone a save? Also, should I try disbanding the air group or something?

Here's a screenshot, with the mouse hovering over the base icon for Tassafaronga:

[image]local://upfiles/7808/Ay757646162.jpg[/image]

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/28/2005 2:18:23 AM)

9 May 1942: Today the IJN sank two USN fleet carriers with submarines. I was ridiculously lucky. How often has that ever happened in WITP, or UV for that matter?

It should be said that both Lexington and Yorktown were badly crippled and might not have made port anyway. One was close to Cairns; the other was somewhat further south.

Alikchi2 -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/28/2005 2:24:05 AM)

Insanely lucky!! Well done.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/29/2005 4:05:46 AM)

10 May 1942: The submarine war continues unabated. Maikarant has now depth-charged and sunk two of my subs, whereas I've landed maybe one depth charge on one of his -- and with Fog of War, who knows if I really hit it significantly. I'm annoyed that my air ASW isn't doing much of anything, and I've ordered more planes to take up this task.

In the meantime, Maikarant pounded Lae again, and he shot down a whole squadron of Zeroes. Ouch! He's not supposed to be able to do that in May 1942! Grrr. He also caught six on the ground, which hurts almost as much -- though at least I didn't lose those skilled early-war pilots. I did get off a couple of Nell attacks on his ships resupplying Port Moresby, and I put a whole in one cargo vessel. I also sank an AVD in the Coral Sea.

Maikarant has sunk 10 or 12 of my ships, and I've sunk only four of his. But two of my victims were fleet carriers, and that alone may keep me ahead on points through the end of the scenario. That, and my greedy grabbing of undefended island bases in the Solomons. But it now appears that I won't achieve my ultimate (perhaps unrealistic) goal of taking Port Moresby. Thus it seems likely that our Battle of the Coral Sea will mirror the real thing -- a tactical victory for me, a strategic victory for Maikarant.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/29/2005 4:07:36 AM)

11 May 1942: The quietest day yet in our little 15-day war. Maikarant unleashed his bombers on Buna, and he also bombed (and, fortunately, missed) my task force supplying my newest acquisition, Kiriwina Island. Meanwhile, I finally sank one of his submarines.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/29/2005 4:09:22 AM)

KIRIWINA ISLAND, South Pacific, May 12, 1942 (UPI) - There are unconfirmed reports that Japan and the United States fought the war's first surface-ship battle near this tiny island off the coast of Papau New Guinea. According to Australian Coastwatchers, an American Bombardment Task Force surprised a small Japanese resupply Task Force that was preparing to unload supply over the beach.

TOKYO, Japan, May 12, 1942 (Reuters) - The Japanese government today denied rumors that its invasion of Port Moresby has been delayed by the naval and air forces of the United States. "Our troops are preparing to liberate Papua New Guinea as I speak," said a spokesman for the Prime Minister.

WASHINGTON, DC, May 12, 1942 (AP) - President Roosevelt publicly praised Admiral Maikarant for his tenacious defense of Port Moresby, the key Allied outpost on Papua New Guinea, just east of Australia. "Admiral Maikarant has stood his ground where others have failed," the President proclaimed. Privately, however, the President's aides expressed concern over the loss of two American carriers and over unconfirmed reports that Japan has seized the entire island of Guadalcanal, an obscure island south of Rabaul.

Grotius -> RE: The Coral Sea (Scenario 3): Grotius vs. Maikarant (1/29/2005 4:11:11 AM)

12 May 1942: Today indeed witnessed the war's first surface-ship vs. surface-ship engagement. Maikarant sent a nasty task force of heavy cruisers to bombard Kiriwina Island, which I seized just a day ago, and in so doing surprised the two ships I had ordered to resupply the small garrison there. When he was through busting up those ships, he annhilated much of my ground force on the island with a massive bombardment from his big naval guns.

Of course, my valiant Betties and Nells flew to the rescue out of Rabaul...oh, wait. I'd ordered them all to rest for a day to shed fatigue. But surely my remaining aircraft carrier made mincemeat of the impertinent Americans?! Um, no, it was busy with other duties.

At least my submarine commanders were on the job, making more holes in the sides of imperialist naval vessels. Unfortunately, one of those sub commanders now has a permanent home on the ocean floor.
