How come surface combat TFs on patrol to protect a friendly base don't seem to intercept transport tfs carrying invasion troops?

Depends on where they are, and what there home port is (i think)...

If home port is Tulagi, say, and you have Patrol/Do Not Retire set - they SHOULD defend Tulagi if they are within their react range. I.e. - if react range is set for 6 hexes, and they are 3 hexes away, they should react and attempt an intercept.

If home port is NOT Tulagi, and Tulagi is invaded - they probably will not react, no matter what the react range is.

well, no one answer but interception is not a gaurentee, they probably have to spot the tf in ?, have fuel etc... check your leader ratings too.. do the ships have radar?

ETF -> RE: Patrol/Do not retire? (1/18/2005 4:31:30 PM)

is it not suppose to protect all bases within the area of say "6" hex range. Assuming you have the leader/weather/fuel etc....

Does it work?

What happens if you put react to 6 and leave retirement on will they react to enemy fleets also. If so whats the difference.

Ok sorry being docked does that affect anything if the react is still 6

Surface ships re. above :)

I've always suspected a problem with the routine if a TF set to patrol in home base hex. PTs and SC TFs DON'T react because they auto dock despite orders. Same problem with Minewarfare TFs. Needs a fix.

Nikademus -> RE: Patrol/Do not retire? (1/18/2005 5:21:52 PM)

make sure the home TF actually has the home port set as it's destination. (if a TF is formed from the same port it will have no destination set)

Also ensure that you have clicked undock TF and have it's orders set to Do not retire. I've yet to see a failed interception when taking these steps.

AmiralLaurent -> RE: Patrol/Do not retire? (1/18/2005 5:40:39 PM)

Same tactic as Nikademus.

Create a surface TF in its home port. Give order "patrol/do not retire". Click on undock. Give the TF the base as destination.

TF will not dock automatically and so be able to 1) react 2) chase subs in the hex

If the original question was a surface TF not reacting to an invasion TF in the same hex, I have never seen that but naval battles are not automatic when two TFs meet, the detection level should be high enough to start the battle. But the level of detection is very low so there are battles almost everytime. I have only seen a TF of one PT not engage a surface TF in the same hex.
On the other hand, transport TF of both sides may share an hex without anyone bothering to open fire. Don't know what happens if two mine warfare TF meet.

Nikademus -> RE: Patrol/Do not retire? (1/18/2005 5:49:24 PM)

also make sure the TF is set to Surface Combat as it's mission. I know that sounds like a no brainer but honestly, i did this flub once in a recent game....sent a strong CL/DD force to Rangoon to attack some transports. Turn after turn they didn't attack till finally i discovered that i'd left the TF set to "ASW mission"

whoops. [:D]

denisonh -> RE: Patrol/Do not retire? (1/18/2005 7:51:37 PM)

And make sure that they are in a place that is within movement range.

I have had a TF "react", but it took an extra turn, so they sat in a port during daylight (instrad of hit and run at night) and had the beje$us knocked out of them by Betties, Nells, and then the surface forces sitting in the hex.

It works, so just like those of us who had bad experiences in UV, you can have them if not careful nin WitP.
