"If that is *not* a gun in your pocket - here is my phone number..."

janushm -> RE: Name This...(294) (1/21/2005 9:21:51 AM)

marlet in the back

grossmetzger -> RE: Name This...(294) (1/21/2005 9:46:50 AM)

perhaps she is from the friendly used-plane shop round the corner

No, I think it is a taped over Brit roundel, see the red color under the peeling tape?

Mynok -> RE: Name This...(294) (1/21/2005 6:13:34 PM)

"oyal Navy" on the tail would tend to support that theory as well. [:D]

mlees -> RE: Name This...(294) (1/21/2005 7:13:03 PM)

Uh, wait. I see what he was saying. Look closely at the blue section of the roundel. There is a hint of a star in the paint texture. This could be a lend lease aircraft model.

janushm -> RE: Name This...(294) (1/21/2005 7:54:10 PM)

like i said...marlet...know to the americans as the wildcat

A Lend Lease PR Photo, showing the handing over of a USN Wildcat (aka Marlet) to the Royal Navy. The Star is being peeled off to show the British Roundel.

A Royal Navy WREN Tears the U.S. "Star" circle from the fuselage of a Grumman FM-1 "Wildcat" fighter, revealing British Fleet Air Arm markings underneath, as the plane is transferred to the Royal Navy to become a "Martlet V". A U.S. Navy sailor is paying very close attention to particular aspects of the process.
The ceremony took place at Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, Rhode Island, in September 1943.
The plane bears British serial number JV-331.
Photographed by Lieutenant Charles Fenno Jacobs, USNR.

Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.

That squid isn't thinking of planes, or the war, or whose flag is under the paint.

That grin on his face says it all.
