Big freaking US Naval gun, looks like either a 5"/51 Mk 7 or a 6"/53 Mk 9.

Just a wild guess, but if you're gonna guess, might as well be specific [:)] 5"/51 upper deck mount on USS Texas Also a guess, the picture dates from about 1938.

USN 4” L/50 or 5” L/51. I’m inclined to think it’s the 4”

In doing research for War Plan Orange, all US destroyers armed with the 4"/50 Mk 9 had gunshields, whereas the 5"/51 Mk 7 did not. If it had a shield I'd say 4", but the mounting and lack again makes me inclined to 5"/51 Mk7 or 6"/53 Mk 9, as mounted on the last 3 V boats (Argonaut, Narwhal, and Nautilus).

I'll side w/ pompack on this one because texas rules . . . er . . . the USS Texas rules. It's so far out of the water it has to be an upper deck 5'.

Looks like a four stacker destroyer back there to me. I'm gonna guess that this a six inch gun. Notice the lifting stanchions behind the sailors. Would these be used for moving the heavy (100-120 lb ammo) shells to the gun? Tiornu? Tankerace? Staged photo. I don't think anybody actually works a gun in their dress whites.

If its a destroyer, its one of a handful of about 20 Clemson class Flush Deckers rearmed with the 5"/51 in all four positions. Most of these were either lost at Honda Point in 1923 (Based out of San Pedro and Mare Island) or converted to the APDs, DMs, DMSs, and AVPs we all know and love. If its a sub its either V-4 (Argonaut), V-5 (Narwhal) or V6 (Nautilus). If its a sub, I think the conning tower is to close to the gun, so my guess (again, if a sub) is Argonaut.

It looks like the 5in/51 to me. I don't believe it's a V-boat; I don't recall seeing any subs with a "toe board" (for lack of better term) at the edge of the deck. The 5in/51 served aboard quite a variety of ships at various times: aircraft carriers, auxiliaries, subs, etc.

These guys are too spiffy, there doesn't seem to be "flooding space" between the wooden deck slats, and there is the previously noted toe-board. Also the gun does not seem to be centered in front of the superstructure to the right. This gives me the impression that this is a large ship - so since Texas is taken, I'll guess the 5"/51 of USS New York.
