Wasn't there an old pre-Harpoon game called North Atlantic 86 that covered the convoy war in the event of a European War? I would love an updated Harpoon or something that covered that genre. I have played the most recent updated Harpoon, but something that is more turned based to make it PBEM playable would be better. Something like a PacWar meets War in Russia. Covering the land and air and naval side of a 1980's European War would be a great game.

I'd like to see a new Harpoon game with some new and better graphics. I'd also like to see a new "Carrier Strike": take command of a carrier battlegroup; actually get into the hanger and load ordance; choose the type of strike planes for attacks, etc... all with new graphics...

It was fun, and I have it sitting on my shelf today. I do not remember it being all that detailed. It was more or less, here are your orders to play the battle and sink some stuff. It had great graphics for the time. On the back it shows the graphics and says, "688's stunning 3D graphics blow everything right out of the water." The requirments were 16 color EGA, DOS 2.0, or 256 Color VGA.

LOL it's good to see that OLD games never die, they just don't work anymore. Speaking of which, how many computer games do you all own total? I have a case that holds 100 cd's it's all full, then another rack that holds my 16 top games it's all full, then a closet full of commodore 64 and Amiga 500 games it's full. lol

I'd have many more to count, but about 5 years ago I lost my house and finally threw all my Apple II and MAC wargames into the dumpster so I don't have that closet anymore like you do [;)] I've started unloading some of my old DOS titles too I just gave away the "Perfect Trilogy" (the Perfect General series) to an impoverished co-worker who has an ancient PC and only runs DOS and WIN 3.1 titles. He also got both of my "Aces" flight simulators (Aces Over Europe and Aces over the Pacific). Kinda hated to part with them, but IL-2 and Pacific Fighters pretty much relegates those old titles to the dustbin of history.

And that's long after all the Amiga and DOS stuff got slung out. Maybe twenty in the "installed" category, another forty in the "may well play again at some stage" category, and two drawers (maybe another 100) full on top of that that I really ought to get rid of.

Great thread: I loved the road war games, There is something there that would make a great new game. Post apocalypse world. Build a gang. Choose and recruit on a need scale. scavange for needs. Build an empire What else do you need for a great game???????? And forgot to add: Find any road form of transport and fill it with weapon crazy maniacs. (could do this in the old versions but just think what could be done now! ( custom jobs) Thinking of a 2D battleground like Jagged Alliance2 - how cool with 2 buss loads of radiation loaded crazies with shotguns, the odd AK and .22 air guns - bearing down on a flat bed truck with a badly mounted Lewis gun, some home made Brown Bess's and a crate of Molotov cocktails. From a side road we see a guy on a moped with a crazy grin with a monkey on his back clutching a bunch of Bananas - is he for real? or are the bananas smoking? And what are they fighting for? An old Tyre depot with 40 new tyres (only 14%) of which are usable of to your gang. Some medicine. Some food. A few porno vids and a complete tool kit with captive elite engineer. Roadwar was an idea way before it's time!!

You just can't beat those old SSI games for the C64. The graphics were anything from bad to silly, you knew you were getting cheated and didn't care, but one thing stood out above everything else: they were fun.

Yeah it's amazing the fun you could get out of a 2mb game and can't find any out of a 2 gigabyte one today. lol Dated graphics or not, Roadwar is still a great idea and a great game.

Back in the mid eighties, I was not spoiled, yet, by glitzy graphics. Just glad for something to do on westpac. The "Falcon" series flight sims were a big hit, as were the SSI D&D titles like "Pool of Radiance" or "Curse of the Azure Bonds". Loved "Car Wars". Didn't own "Road War". I'd settle for a turn based game. I don't have the hand to eye coordination for a click and twitch "shooter" version of car wars.

They should buy Master of Orion III from Atari and turn it into the game it should have been. (MOM I and II combined and updated/bigger/cooler). Atari destroyed this classic game....

Yep and now we have to prepare for 64 bit technology. Windows new OS and new hardware and motherboards. Time to dig deep into your pocket books fellas, then in 2 more years they will give use 128 bit technology and then 256 and then 512 lol I swear they already have the maximum technology that aliens gave to us at Roswell and they are just milking the public with a little bit at a time. Did anyone else see that documentary on the History Channel I think it was about Roswell and the strict security it has and invading that guys trailor and taking all his pictures and data he had compiled on Roswell? It was pretty interesting seeing all the security measures the government has setup there. Some fine line, if you cross it, they'll be all over you like you know what. Even showed some weird flash of lights in the sky zooming around, like something others would call a UFO, they only come out at night. heh Sounds like a sci-fi movie.

On Harpoon might be worth pointing out that theres the old Original, then theres that crappy harpoon 4 I think it was and then theres Alliances remake of original, basically which was a little graphics spiffing and bug fix's. I have on my XP Harpoon alliance version which runs fine in XP. Harpoon Classic ver 1.55F

Grigsby's North Atlantic '86 (1982) is a blast - played it a lot 4-5 years ago on an apple emulator when i only had a DX2/66. it has pretty much the entire North Atlantic with a big convoy war involving resupplying UK/Iceland to keep the airbases there alive, otherwise they get captured. not near as realistic as the SimCan games, but the map is on screen so no dry-erase markers on a map! but both games are easier to play than harpoon because the player controls task forces, not individual ships or the weapon systems. and turn based makes a perfect PBEM possibility! SimCan's fifth eskadra and seventh fleet did come with 2 big foldout maps and a big pile of counters so you could play out the game visually, but i don't think i ever used them in that way - i just drew the map on graph paper, laminated it, and used a dry erase marker on it. but the map looks great hanging on the wall as a poster! i'm sure the next simcan game matrix does will be a WW II naval game (hopefully involving the north atlantic convoy war), but after that i'm crossing my fingers for strategic modern naval combat!

To the original question, I'd love to see Age of Rifles and Imperialism II redone. For Imperialism II, I'd be hoping the combat system would be expanded. That was the part that always irritated me. As to the how many games do we own. Wow, I'd have to say I have about 70 or so currently. However last year I threw away 2 17" monitor boxes full of DOS and Amiga games. I did keep about 10-12 of my favorite DOS games...just couldn't part with them yet. Imperialsm I & II and AOR were part of the saved 12. [:)]

I used to play North Atlantic '86 on our Apple 2c, I loved that game, I remember sortying the British Fleet in a suicidal surface mission to keep the Russkies from taking Iceland, good times. I have always been intrigued with a Soviet vs US Naval engagement. Here you had these two behemoth navies that never got to square off like we saw at Jutland or in the Pacific. Anyhow, first post here, just wanted to say hello, I enjoy playing PacWar and might be in the market for a PBEM game.

Ahhh "Knights of the Sky" another great WWI airwar game. I liked it cause you got to takeoff and land your plane during missions, other games would give you missions and just stick you in the air or auto start and auto end the mission once you completed it or got shot down. Look at all these suggestions Matrixgames dudes. heh There's 100's of them looking for remakes and if there are 100's then there are 1000's and if there are 1000's there are 10's of thousands. ;) The ole 10x10x10 people you know method. ;)

Ok my 2 or 3 cents. Xcom of course, probably my all time fav computer game, only one to cost me a GF and a job. No Greater Glory type civil war game. I liked the political aspect but of course the military aspect was a joke. Take the MOO frachise away from those who gave us MOO III. Oh and Emperor of the Fading Suns, I know there is a group out there trying to remake that one, it was probably no 2 on my list.

I haven't read through the entire thread so I don't know if it has been mentioned. No Greater Glory by SSI Amazing civil war game on the strategic level with politics etc. It did suffer from an bad interface though. Otherwise one of the best game I have ever plyed. Edit: Ha ha ha, just saw the post above.... Well at least I am not alone then.
