Best one Ive seen is the BBC's Great War. Can also be bought of about £89.99 and its worth every penny.

I have always wanted to see that series as it came out around the same time as the CBS one that I mentioned...unfortunately, it is only available as a Region 2 DVD....must pick up an all region DVD player some day....not to go off topic, but the whole idea of regionalized DVD's stinks!

Yeah I know. I just bought a multi region DVD from Amazon. It was only £29.99 which is very cheap for a multi region.

I am watching this documentary (3 dvd set) and it's very enjoyable. The footage is very crisp. Highly recommended.

I received my copy the other day.... it is quite comprehensive for a 1/2 hour weekly series and it is as good as I remembered it...the DVD set though was made on the cheap, as they could have at least included chapter breaks...[:)]

This is really getting me in the mood for GoA!

I'm not really into WWI but I saw a documentary series on t.v. a while back called "WWI in colour" it was pretty neat. It goes through war break out, trench warfare, the air war, the war at sea, technology advances and stuff and they have voice actors read actual letters from soldiers. It's also pretty cool to see it all in color of course.

Thats the worse docu made on WW1. Its was just the colour gimmick that made it stand out. Infact really it was just "look how clever we are" kind of thing. For the most comprehensive series watch the BBC The Great War. Made in the sixties as the precurser to World at War and the best thing is it has loads of eye witness accounts as many survivors were still alive at the time.

I don't know the "BBC great war" might be better, I havent seen it. I don't spend alot of time watching WWI documentaries. But I don't see what was really wrong with WWI in colour. The narrating is good, they tell the story well, they read letters and they have 105 year old WWI veteran commentaries. If it was simply "Oh look how clever we are" it would just been some WWI color footage and nothing else. The color aspect just adds a nice touch.

Quote from Amazon and I have to agree.

" Reviewer: RJ Tarr from Wolverhampton, West Mids United Kingdom
As a history teacher, I eagerly awaited the launch of this series, but was chronically disappointed. Much of the footage is repeated between the episodes - it is clear that the team coloured in a battle scene, a "bored in the trenches" scene, a "flag waving" scene and all the rest of it - so that they could cut and paste it around the bland narrative. The gravitas with which Branagh speaks is laughable given the brain-dead script. I can't even use this with my 13 year olds. The only enlightening detail is that poison gas apparently turned everyone and everythink flourescent and psychedelic. Dire. "

Actually its not as bad as that but there are much better docu of WW1.
Honestly if you can afford it buy The Great War. You will not be dissapointed. Very expensive though.

"The only enlightening detail is that poison gas apparently turned everyone and everythink flourescent and psychedelic"[:D] This is just one opinion, and the guy was clearly in a crappy mood, lol it's so exaggerated. Anyways i'm not gonna debate over WWI documentaries. But I will take up your recommendation on BBC's great war...

To ANYONE interested in WWI, this CBS series from the early 1960s is undoubtedly THE best made on the war.
I've seen a great many documentaries on WWI, and frankly, none are as comprehensive as this.
Also, now that I am getting to be an 'old fogey' I can thruthfully say that the newer productions - though the CGI can add value - don't capture the spirit or essance of the event that the older ones do. Many of these older series were produced or edited with the members of the generation that participated in the event, and somehow they left an imprint in their productions that is missing by today's productions - they seem perhaps a little too out of touch with the event as it was.

Anyway - YES - get it on DVD you won't be sorry.[&o]
