OrionX -> What exactly will WOP add to WitP? (1/31/2005 11:05:20 PM)

I read the FAQ but didn't find the answer there.

Three new scenarios and two new campaigns all set in the 1920's, complete with new graphics and OOBs. It basically turns WitP into a different game. Instead of carrier battles and island hoping, you will focus more on battleship fights and convoy interdiction. It has an entirely new ship database, each with its own new graphic (some even have two to represent modernized appearance), and over two dozen new aircraft, again complete with new graphics. Land units, air units, and naval units have all been meticulously researched for historical accuracy, and accurately reflect the forces and equipment available in the 1920s.

Sounds great. Thanks.

What sort of timescale will the scenarios follow? Do they start in the 20's or the 30's or both? And how long do scenarios last? I imagine there is some sort of time limit to avoid damaging the fabric of the space-time continuum.[:D]

The campaigns are 4 and a half years in length, the first one going from 1922-1926, and the other 1926-1930. Each assumes the other doesn't happen, the reason being is the first focuses more on fighting the war in a World War I style with few carriers and predreadnoughts, while the second is a mix of never were ships and more modern steel biplanes and early carrier aviation.

A smaller scenario takes place in 1922 and starts out like the first campaign, but ends at the end of 1923, thus eliminating any chance of a British intervention and never were ships (sans the Tosas).

2 PBEM only scenarios take place near Formosa, with the Japanese having to supply it, and with the Allies trying to starve it. The British variant takes place in 1928, and the American variant in 1929.

While I am planning more scenarios, this five will be the core of the expansion, and will be the ones shipping with release.

Sounds great, especially the never-were's. It sounds like a great groups of scenarios. Can't wait to get ahold of this.

[&:] and any covering the 1914-1918 period?? What about one covering the siege of Tsingtao?

Tankerace -> RE: What exactly will WOP add to WitP? (2/3/2005 9:08:57 PM)

Well, while I would have like to have done a World War I scenario, there were little military operations in the 1914-1918 period (nevermind that Japan and Britain would have to be on the same side). The main noticable thing that could be accomplished is a large commerce raiding game, in which the Central Power player tries to destroy as many AKs and APs as possible before inevitably loosing his ship, which is something that wouldn't be all to fun to play.

As for the Siege of Tsingtao, that would have to be a two month scenario (2 September 1914-7 November 1914). However, considering it would be 23,000 Japanese troops and 1,500 British troops against about 4,000 German troops, in WitP's land combat this would probably take only about a week, maybe even less.

While I would love to cover all these battles (most notably the pursuit of Graf Spee's squadron), I would rather put out quality, fin to play hypothetical scenarios than short, not very fun historical scenarios.

That was one of the forces behind making this expansion. If I can't give you a World War I battle, then I can give you a World War I style naval battle. Granted, its not the same, but it is workable in the framework of War in the Pacific.

That said, I am also sketching out the details to do a Russo-Japanese War, which I want to try and cover the entire conflict, allowing the players to fight the decisive naval battle and siege/defend Port Arthur. However, this will not ship with release. My plan is to create War Plan Orange dealing mainly with hypothetical naval battles of 1922-1930, and then expand on that as much and branch out to different conflicts.

While I will make no promises, I do want to try and create a Russo-Japanese war campaign, but only after War Plan Orange is released and if WitP can handle it (Taking place in 1904-1905, there will be no aircraft, which will make it more difficult than War Plan Orange is now). I must stress, if you are reading this and are considering buying War Plan Orange after release, do not buy it because I may do a Russo-Japanese War campaign. Buy it for what it already has. I make this statement as something I would like to do, but not something I am promising the consumer that I will do.

It was towards the end of the war when they entered, but the US was on the same side as well.[;)]

Yeah, but there was NO activity in the Pacific.... unless you count every thing leaving the Pacific :) And by that time all German units in the Pacific had long been sunk or withdrawn.... and then sunk [;)]
