iberian -> AT units, some thoughts (2/2/2005 10:35:26 AM)

I played the Red Hammer scenario yesterday. You have to hold your objective areas against a mechanized WP assault, and your assets are basically a British mechanized infantry battalion. As a part of these assets, you will find several anti-tank platoons, equipped with FV-432s with dismounted Milan launchers (the British M-113 equivalent). These "dismounted" launchers can only be used while the unit is stopped (for example: with "Hold" orders), and have an effective range of 2Km. I set up my AT platoons in areas of heavy coverage ("forest" squares), with good LOS to the most probable avenue of approach of the enemy. I set them to "Hold" with "Dug in" exposure, preapring a good ambush. I was shocked to see that the first recon elements of the WP, basically composed by BRMD-2 armored cars and some recon BRMs, were able to anhilate my AT platoons with extreme ease. OTH, they weren't able to cause any significant damage to the enemy. I'll have to ponder what I did wrong. I want to raise some points: a) We need some ways to know when the weapons of a unit have the "dismounted" flag while in game, in the Hardware inspector. Right now, you have to access the "Platform List.pdf" to learn such info. b) It would be useful to have an option to highlight the squares that can be reached with the maximum range weapon of a given unit. I know the Sitrep gives you the number of squares, but its not as easy as highlighting it on map, much as the LOS or Move options do. c) When does a unit with "Hold" orders, and SOP that specifies them to stay put, decides to break contact?
