PeteG662 -> OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 10:23:31 PM)

Looking for a strategic/operational space game (and don't suggest Star Shatter). Anything good with operational/strategic with some tactical stuff as well?

Thanks

There's gotta be a way to do one based on Starblazers. [;)]

Nikademus -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 10:30:23 PM)

How about Battlecruiser: Millenium???

(actually i have no idea....but i've noticed that typing those two words tends to set people at each other's throats.....)

[:'(]

Well, since you are from an alien spacecraft I would think you have an idea!

Is there anything out there that anyone knows about?

Nikademus -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 10:44:46 PM)

I love space and scifi but the last space wargame i ever played was the 8bit "Imperium Galactum" by SSI

I'd love to play some newer ones but i always end up spending my limited time playing historical wargames. Days need to be made bigger [;)]

Is Imperium any good?

It's about 10 years old, but "Masters of Orion" was an awesome game. I have a friend who still plays it (on an old machine).

I think they made MOO 2 and MOO 3, but I didn't play them.

The original was pretty fun, though. You could play from 8 or so races, pick things that your race is specialized in (government, trade, research, production, fighting, etc etc etc). You would explore the galaxy, build colonies, research technology, build spaceships, trade/fight with the other races, deal with random events, etc.

Each colony had to be managed. (income, food, pollution, unrest, etc)

it's a fun game that took about 2 to 10 hours to play. (I would play over and over again, though) it just depends on how big you start the galaxy at, and how many opponents you want.

It was strategic, like WITP, but the fleet battles were pretty cool. you would maneuver and attack individual ships (turn based mode). You can build custom ships, or just the generic ship of your technology.

fun. (the original doesn't work in XP, or I'd borrow it from my friend)

Didn't MOO have cheesy graphics?

moses -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:03:14 PM)

At the time (early 90's?) the graphics were pretty awesome. Now they look kinda bad. But the game is still fun.

It's an old one but Rules of Engagement 2 by Omnitrend used to be referred to as PacWar in space.

Star Wars Rebellion is a little more recent than the above and comes close to what you describe.

Hopefully someone will remake Imperium Galactum, which was a great space game that also had ground troops/combat represented well.

It was fantastic for a 1986 game. I played alot of hours on it. I had fun designing my own ship classes. Only part that sucked was you had the option of "purging" a planet vs "invading" it. Turns out it was always easier to just purge the planet because it would leave the resources intact and you could occupy it like you colonizing it. Made armies superfluous in the game. It was far more interesting to try to invade planets, course the AI only ever "purged"

PeteG662 -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:11:23 PM)

Was the Imperium from 97 and Imperium II from 2000 a knockoff of the original SSi title?

Nikademus -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:12:45 PM)

I dont think so. Similar titles only.

PeteG662 -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:19:49 PM)

The original was C64 and Atari, correct?

Nikademus -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:23:11 PM)

yes. 8bit

Black Cat -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:24:23 PM)

Space Empires IV Gold by Malfador Machinations, published by Shrapnel Games.

One of the best 4X Games ever made. Strategic and Tactical levels. Conquor the Galaxy, fight small to large Fleet Battles.

Very Mod-able with outstanding large scale Mods in place.

Quite decent AI ( although the AI in SE III was the best ever created for any Game )

Out for awhile so mostly Bug Free.

Excellent support at the extensive Forums at Shrapnel.

Demo available[;)]

PeteG662 -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:27:09 PM)

I will check it out.

PeteG662 -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:28:40 PM)

Think we could get Matrix interested in an updated Imperium Galacticum? Wasn't Gary at SSI around that time?

Nikademus -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/11/2005 11:40:27 PM)

First they must update Warship/Battlecruiser.

otherwise i will light another bottle rocket...... [sm=00000003.gif]

I fully agree with you with only an exception. AI sucks, better much better via TCP/IP

Galactic Civilizations:

Look for GalcivII as well...

http://www.galciv2.com/

I wish Matrix would buy MOOIII from Atari who royally screwed it up and turn it into a combo of MOOI and II which is what the fans wanted. Only Bigger and Better. This definitely would be a space WITP type game!!! [:D]

I hear ya.....MOO was fantastic for its time.....MOO II was icing on the cake..... then came MOO III wtf !**#$&^#& those boys at Atari ruined a good series.

MOO was the WITP of the space games

Oleg Mastruko -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/12/2005 12:16:07 AM)

I am STUNNED that noone recommended GalCiv or GalCiv 2.

Edit: ah yes Tanaka did [8D]

Galactic Civilizations must be the best galaxy empire building game available. Hard to tell how similar it is to WITP though, but IMHO it leaves MOO3 in the dust.

O.

Salient -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/12/2005 12:39:59 AM)

SEIV is by far the best IMO.

There's a great community around that plays by web.
I'm currently hosting a game for ten players and we do 48 hour turns.
I'm only in 9th position [:(]

2ndACR -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/12/2005 12:48:54 AM)

MOO3[:(][:(][:(][:(][:(][:(][:(]

One of the few games to hit the bargain bin in a month. I would stay away from that one, unless you do some serious searching of the Atari forums and see if the huge fan mod is out yet. Once Atari dropped all support after the only patch, a few fans decided to "cough" cra** "cough" the code and figure out on their own what was going on in there.

DISCLAIMER: I neither condone nor support the cracking of code in any way.[:-]

Grotius -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/12/2005 1:33:43 AM)

Here's another vote for Galactic Civilizations. The AI in the first game seemed unusually strong for a strategy-game AI. The designer claimed the AI was thinking while I was pondering my moves. I dunno if that's true, but I can say that it was no pushover.

And yes, MOO and MOO2 are classics. MOO3 was awful.

Zorfwaddle -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/12/2005 3:01:08 AM)

I must agree with Salient and Black Cat. SEIV is absolutely addictive. I usually play it on my laptop while at the laundromat; Im actually sorry when the driers finish spinning :-).

GalCiv is a good one. MOO III is a baaaad one.

If you guys keep talking about remaking games, and they start listening more, then we will never get CL! Death to remakes I say! Give me CL, CA, and the East Front game!

Charles2222 -> RE: OT - Any suggestions for a space game akin to WitP? (2/12/2005 4:01:11 AM)

Oh great! I guess I waited too long to stop this communist plot to subvert new games forever. You notice my previous post mentioned CA? It's not on the website anymore!!! Wasn't it called Combat Assault (the real time CL)? [:@]
