Toast -> Think I need to be an Allied Fan Boy (2/14/2005 8:09:39 PM)

Continuing my game against the AI (Scenario 13) as Japan and the AI tried to take Guadacanal. Landed the 2nd Marine Div and the remnants of the 1st Marine Div and 37th Division. Covered the landing with three new fast BB's but no aircover. The KB plastered them, sunk the North Carolina and heavily dmamaged the South Dakota (probably sunk too). Just made me sick to my stomach to see those fine ships misused like that. Now the Marines and Army units are going to be forced to surrender. I actually was very upset about the massacre of the American forces. Don't think I am cut out to be a Japanese fan-boy.

I don't think the AI is cut out to play the Allies. Certainly makes the game more even, though, doesn't it?

Does the AI do any better as the Japanese? Seems it would e worse at that. At last as the Allies it will eventually get very good planes and more and more ships and will overwelhm the Japanese with sheer numbers.

Think I might be ready to graduate to a PBEM game. Maybe after I come back from vacation at the beginning of March.

I just polled some people about their interest in a PBEM as well - largely for the same reason.

I think the AI would be better as the Japanese since, while on the offensive in the first six months, its shortcomings are masked by its overwhelming situational advantages, e.g., pps prevent redeployment by Allies, poor or outnumbered Allied units, Zero bonus, etc. Later, the AI's shortcomings are masked because it is on the defense, where it can sit and wait like a dumb rock. My guess, without first-hand experience, is that it would be pretty bad on the offensive as the Allies, where you really need to choreograph invasions in detail.

Your post of an invasion without air support is an example. A good invasion force will have a bombardment TF, one or more air support TFs, maybe an ASW escort, minesweepers, a supply TF, one or more troop ship TFs that include assault infantry, at least one airbase unit, Seabees or other construction engineers, and possibly HQs, CD units, arty, or AA. It's a lot to pull together and coordinate, and the AI is not up to it.
