Certainly von Falkenhayn envisioned an attritive struggle "to bleed the French white"; his memoirs state that even after the war, he believed that a favorable 5:2 casualty ratio had been achieved. However, I believe taking Verdun was a "bonus" objective -- the seizure of Verdun would help secure the rail lines parallel to the German front line and stabilize their position in France, as well as deal a huge public-relations blow to the French government. In any event, this thread has prompted posting on the forum with relation to WW1, so I believe the offensive has succeeded! [:)]
