What is the point of scuttling your ships? Does it cost less VPs than just letting them sink? Read the manual but can't find the answer to this.

Also, anyone got any tips for allied a/c hitting Japaneese t/f in early months of the war? Got Jap carriers sailing with impunity off the coast of Malaysia / DEI with impunity whilst my t/fs intercepting their invasion fleets hit bottom with alarming rapidity due to air raids. realise EXP + morale of allied aircrew not the best (or their aircraft), but any suggestions appreciated.

P.S. Love this game, despite the bugs. Great that it will almost last as long as the real thing to see it through!

haha, If playing the Allies don't ever try to take on KB with surface vessles. If you see that Jap TF....RUN As far as hitting Jap ships with your bombers, look carefuly at their experience. It's very low at start of the war. Your best and toughest would appear to be the flying forts(B-17's) and your dauntless and devastators taking off from your precious carriers. Don't try and take on the Japs early, you will get your head handed to you. patience patience patience.

After Action Reports:

Noob Allied Commanders attempting to crush Imperial Japan.

Assault odds 8 bazillion to 1

Noobs retreat!

may God help us [X(][X(].

Not trying to tackle KB, but the unescorted invasion forces. Can usually tear up Wake Is invasion forces with my carriers + a few of the others, but just annoying that I'm frustrated off Sumatra etc by a couple of CVLs with no air cover. Guess that's 1941 for you? Presume I'm right about scuttle command?

RUPD3658 -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/23/2005 4:12:37 AM)

Yes, scuttling saves 10% of the VPs. I almost never do it though. For the point or two saved I would rather have the ship draw fire away from some less damaged ship.

As far as early war Allied action, I would use my CVs to hit unescorted TFs when the KB is nowhere near. Surface TFs can also hit unescorted transports with some success. Early on you will get killed VS Jap warships.

The only success I had with land based air was to use it against TFs without aircover. Sank a few BBs with Vildebeasts that way. They will get slaughtered once there is aircover so hit them early then run for OZ.

esteban -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/23/2005 4:23:56 AM)

I don't scuttle a whole lot either. Maybe if the ship is at 95% damage, and on fire or something, and a long way from a base. Otherwise, my feeling is that you can coax about 1 in 5 (or 10) really badly hit ships into port, thereby saving the VP cost pretty much entirely.

Also, even the worst cripples can draw enemy fire from your "healthy" ships, which usually saves you more VPs than you "gain" by scuttling the ship.

bradfordkay -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/23/2005 7:05:22 AM)

If you've got a badly damaged ship that has been floating after combat, watch how fast it is receiving flotation damage. If it's adding 3 points a turn, scuttle it on the turn it reaches at least 97 flotation. I will agree that it's a good decoy if you've other endangered ships nearby, but if not, deny the Japanese player the victory points!

RUPD3658 -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/24/2005 12:26:58 AM)

Just make sure not to scuttle barges. I don't know if this has been fixed but in UV a scuttled barge registered as 1vp while one that was sunk was worth 0 vp.

Hornblower -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/24/2005 1:30:39 AM)

I've only scuttled a ship once. It was an AK, that was going down anyway. I hit the button just to see [:D]. As for the KB- Run. I just had Nagomo and company come in the Java sea, blasting as it went, up to singapore (refuel i suppose) then come back down for a repeat performance. When all was said and done i think i lost a total of 3cl's 4 dd's and a dozen or so AK's and gutted what was left of my dutch fighters. Intel is now showing enemy TF's heading toward Batvia- lovely!

Grotius -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/24/2005 8:21:12 AM)

Scuttling also ensures that the commanding officer survives, right?

Nikademus -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/24/2005 7:36:44 PM)

yes...otherwise its a 50% chance of losing him

Tom Hunter -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/24/2005 9:17:09 PM)

To get an attack off on KB you need fighter escorts with bombers that have experience over 60 or so.

If your bombers are 70+ experience they might go alone but they may not.

Recently KB went sailing past a base that had some well trained P40Bs and my elite Walrus group and they got together and tried to sink a CV. It did not work very well, but they tried.

A month or two ago I had over 100 B26s and B25s with P40s in range of KB and they refused to do anything.

Get used to they idea that day to day combat actions will make no sense. You have to look at the game over days and weeks or it will drive you crazy.

I think it should be called an alternative lifestyle, not a game.. or perhaps a black hole in my dayplaner

Of course, over days and weeks of involvement crazy becomes normal, so everything works out fine in the end...[:'(]

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Noob questions (sorry!) (2/24/2005 11:00:54 PM)

If crew factors were modelled and counted like squads, I bet there would be more scuttleing. Point being trained naval squads would be hard to replace and would be constantly diluted bu having to divide them amongst all the new ship construction. And like LCU squads, they would have a victory value. Would have made a hell of a difference regarding player attitudes towards losing ships. If a CV has 200 naval squads on board, that's another potential 200 VP if lost.
