spampire -> Thinking of buying this game (3/2/2005 7:32:54 AM)

Just had a few questions for all you Warheads.

I saw some of the screen shots and I like how it shows the ships in battle as they fight.
Is it the same (GUI) with the planes and ground troops ECT...

I have a lot of time to play and have been reading a lot about this game I hear it's really hard to learn. I've played some good stat games, but they don't have the detail/complex interface as this has. Too hard for me I ask myself [&:]

I'm sure there will be more questions if I decide to buy this game.

Thanks for any replies.

Those are combat animations I think. Most players turn those off after a while to speed up turn resolution.

Now I am, perhaps, this game's single biggest critic. As an example of a quality piece of high performance, bug free, well designed system, it flat out SUCKS. You'd never want to present this thing in a college computer science class as an example of how to write and design modern applications. It is written in style in vogue in 1985, not 2005, and as such its bugs are extremely intractible, it is virtually impossible to extend, it's data structure is rigid with massive hard coding of what should be "soft" data elements making mods very tough.

With all that said, it is by far the best $70 I have ever spent in my life. The bugs and design limitations and flaws, while obvious, in no way keep it from being the most immersible, playable, fun thing I have experienced. A simply fascinating game experience. As good as it gets, love-hate relationship notwithstanding.

Buy it. You won't be dissappointed.

First I'd suggest you take a look at the thread 'Have you seen the price?', you'll get A LOT of opinions on the game (all good [;)])

It's the best game I've ever played (and I played MANY).

The main problem you may encounter, as you say yourself, is the complexity.
Personally, for the first month, I wasn't sure I would have reached a point where I could have actually enjoyed and managed the game. And I'm talking 'a month', some games are already over in a month [:D]

If you get past that ... you are definitely not going to regret it, I'd bet anything you like.

Whatever I can say, I agree : It's the best game I've ever played ! ! [;)]

Don't buy this game if you are looking for the graphics in a "first person shooter"..Buy the game because it is a strategic game of the entire war in the Pacific,Asia, and Chinese theatres.
The more creative players design add on graphics themselves and you can choose to download them(free) to replace the ones that are in the game.
If you like history, you will also inherit a bunch of contacts on this forum of some really sharp individuals,(and learn to tolerate a few dolts as well).
Good advice has been given,do see the thread "Have you seen the price",and also see my thread "Game cheats",for my opinion.
Welcome to the Pacific, keep your head down, check your P 38 and move fast.

drw61 -> RE: Thinking of buying this game (3/2/2005 1:49:03 PM)

This game is well worth the money, but note that the learning curve is very steep. Once you get over the nuances of how to manage your forces it will take up all your time. There have been several threads complaining about the price but I find that I have definitely gotten my $70 dollars worth out of it.
As a side note, this forum helps a lot with explaining the workings of the game and on the history of the Pacific Theater in WWII, don’t be shy about asking questions.

Ditto.

Place this thread in the new "Should I Buy This" forum.

WITP is hard to learn and I didn't like the interface at first, but I have to say that it's one of the best wargame ever.
BTW, your resistence is futile, you will be assimilated.

Thank you all for the replies.

I decided I will jump aboard and get this game. I'm going to do the DD option and box shipped as well.

One more question before I get the game, there will be many more after that I’m sure.

The PDF manual I've seen where a lot of you have gone to Kinko’s to get it printed and binded. Did you let them print it or did you print it then just have them bind it for you?

Another question: The PDF manual that comes with the game is it up to date or is the another one that is a 3rd party made manual I should get?

PeteG662 -> RE: Thinking of buying this game (3/2/2005 11:18:37 PM)

Kinko's can do either, it all depends on your preferences.

The manual is not as comprehesive as it could be. It was drafted during the beta testing and there are some outdated and sometimes wrong tidbits of information in it. Experience with the game makes the difference. There has been recent talk about possibly editing the manual and posting it on Spooky's site.

Welcome aboard!

1) Great move

2) As to the manual, I would recommend not even binding it. It is far more useful (as a reference) in PDF softcopy for the search capability. There are probably no more than six pages that warrent printing as a constant reference.

3) The manual has not been updated since release, but it is augmented by "what's new" readme files with the updates

4) 3rd party manual?????

Grotius -> RE: Thinking of buying this game (3/3/2005 12:14:29 AM)

I'm glad you're going to try the game, and I encourage you to hang in there after you are overwhelmed -- which you will be. Try playing through the tutorial (scenario 1) while making reference to the "tutorial manual" PDF in the MANUALS directory. That mini-manual (which is 55 pages long) guides you through the tutorial, shows you how to move ships, load troops, assign air missions, etc.

Also, be prepared for a healthy dose of logistics: moving supply and fuel around, and more stuff than that if you play as Japan.

mc3744 -> RE: Thinking of buying this game (3/3/2005 1:02:42 AM)

Welcome aboard [:)]

You'll soon be a wiptaholic and will need counselling. You won't find any ... unless it's about the game [:D] - of course.

Seriously, take your time. Just be sure it'll be difficult at first and incredibly rewarding later on.

DrewMatrix -> RE: Thinking of buying this game (3/3/2005 1:30:24 AM)

There are cheaper games one can buy. You could spend $39.99 for a game you play for about 6 hours over 3 days (then put on the shelf forever).

Or you can pay $70 for this game. I have been playing it for about 6 months and I am only just getting started!

Seems to me that WITP is the better deal there.

ckk -> RE: Thinking of buying this game (3/3/2005 2:57:13 AM)

Welcome aboard. Come to these forums every day and ask question's A lot of us have learned something new here even after playing this game for months[:'(]

MANUAL ???????[sm=00000280.gif]

ckk -> RE: Thinking of buying this game (3/3/2005 6:39:22 AM)

Well theres a lot in the manual and the tutorial but as you play there is still a lot to discover[:'(]And I'll bet after 1.5 there will be a hell of a lot more[:D]

SKORPIO -> RE: Thinking of buying this game (3/3/2005 9:14:21 AM)

Clear the decks - (Put Granny and Grandad in the old peoples home, encourage the wife to run off with the milkman and get the kids adopted.)
Take on fresh water and supplies - (Stock up on six packs, spirit of choice, pizzas and curries.)
Don uniform - (Old t-shirt, shorts and scruffy slippers will suffice.)
Take command of the bridge - (Settle down in a comfy chair and load up WitP.)
Cast off all lines and sail away - (Immerse yourself in the greatest wargame known to man.)

In the immortal words of Gorgeous George, "Is there anything better in the world?" Except for a night with Britney, probably not. This is the game that sort's the men from the boy's, when you play this game you truly are a Wargamer. No other game comes near.
