Actually I'm pretty sure this isn't the assault value. For example, I recently concluded 6 weeks' fighting in Manila with 25 attacking LCUs vs 34 defending; the total of all my units' basic assault value was usually in the range of 1000-1500, with the adjusted value ranging from 800-3000; if I had gone through and added up all the numbers on the ground combat "animation", that total would have been in the 5000-7500 range. I think these numbers represent the units' fire combat values. You'll notice that the second time through, the values for many of the LCUs increase significantly. I believe that the lower value is the units' fire value for bombardment, while the higher one is its direct fire value (used only by units that are assaulting or being assaulted). As always, I could be wrong; this is based solely on observation and not on any special insight into the mechanics.
