buckup -> BiN or SPWAW? (3/16/2005 10:57:38 PM)

I'd like to buy one. I realize they differ in scope but was wondering what you all would recommend buying.

wodin -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/16/2005 11:29:36 PM)

SPWAW is free.

buckup -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/17/2005 1:15:19 AM)

I read that in the forums, but it's $59 on the download page...

OK, Matrix seems to have been trying to hide the freebies [:-]

Go to the Matrix Home Page and then look DOWN at the BOTTOM menu bar. There you will see an option for "DOWNLOADS" which will take you to a page where you can download Pacific War, War in Russia, and, of course, Version 1.30 of Steel Panthers (SPWAW).

The version they sell is the one with the "Mega Campaigns" included.

Personally, I prefer Battles in Normandy as I am not much for tactical games and prefer operational and strategic games.

But I never turn down something this good for free!

Hope this helps!

And BTW...

Why is this download page so hard to find now? Was this an oversight? Or a deliberate attempt to discourage access? [&:]

Thanks, I appreicate your helpful and thoughtful post. Not only did you answer my question, but you provided valuable information rather than just spitting out a reply.

Much appreciated!

Rhondalynn,

I don't know if it's deliberate or not, but I doubt it. However you can still get to the free download via the "Games" menu bar above, then selecting the "Downloads" option after going to the Steel Panthers page. It just seems like it's a consequence of the rearrangement of the top title bar, which I think has made the site much easier to access overall.

You are very welcome!

It was those free downloads that originally got me hooked on Matrix and then slowly, but surely, I started buying their new stuff. Now, I own most of their line.

Proof positive that the Steel Panthers freebie is extremely valuable to Matrix and to the hobby. In fact, I took several military history buffs (who aren't into gaming yet) to that page when we were working together on a graveyard shift at the IU Information Commons just a couple of nights ago. They will probably be downloading the freebies if they haven't done so already. I'll be encouraging them next week when we're on shift together.

Your point is well taken, but if you are newbie stumbling across this site what are the chances that you will be persistent enough to drill down and discover that there are FREE games here? I think it's very remote.

I would put a big box on the Matrix Home page labeled "Steel Panthers: FREE GAME for Download!" and encourage people to give it a try.

I wonder how many people are still downloading SPWAW? I'll bet the # has dropped to almost nothing since the page redesign.

I'm ready to be corrected if I'm off base here [:)]

Bodhi -> RE: Hey Matrix! (3/17/2005 2:12:32 AM)

Hey, I agree with you completely. You're looking at it from a marketing stand-point, I was narrow-mindedly thinking of the site mechanics after the recent update. There's plenty of space on the main page (under polls maybe) for Matrix to put a "free games here" link to a page explaining what's available for free and how it ties into the commercially available titles. I'm sure Joe'll consider it once he gets to reading this thread.[;)]

I hope so! We really need to do everything we can to keep the hobby alive. Getting people "hooked" on our kind of "thinking" games is the key to keeping those games (that we all love to play) coming into production.

I was trying to help.

It didn't think it took much to find the download.

Just goto the game page.

I won't bother again.

Fred98 -> RE: Hey Matrix! (3/17/2005 2:42:46 AM)

If you have to choose......take B.I.N.

SPWAW is free.

Thanks for trying to help? In the future...more information might be helpful. Information such as where one might look for the download. It is not obvious, as other posts in this thread might indicate.

I just downloaded SPWAW and am looking forward to sinking my teeth into it. I'm playing the BiN demo now as well and am enjoying it more and more as I play and get frustrated.

RBWhite -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/17/2005 3:55:03 AM)

backup

You can also checkout the ARMORE site for SPWAW info.

You should get AGW by Schwerpunkt, it's going to have the Western and African Theater and it's due out real soon.

SPWAW of course is free, so that leaves you with BIN what is it now $50? or AGW which is $29.99 ;) (now I shall duck from Matrixgames officials and diehard fans) hehe

But, in all honesty there is nothing wrong with BIN, I'm just giving you some other avenues of choice. ;) I believe in "pro-choice" heh

Zap -> RE: Hey Matrix! (3/17/2005 9:57:08 AM)

Well it was good you were there to help and direct him. Yes, we want all possible to experience the stategey wargame.
There no more satisfying experience in wargaming than to plan and move, battle conquer, be conquered. To watch it all happen before your eyes. Where you can calculate your moves. And watch it all happen without getting a headache because things are moving so fast. Or you develop a nervous twitch from moving and clicking(RTS games)

You wanted to know which to buy so I stated SPWAW was free. Honestly I found it and so have many others. I really didn't think you'd need directions. Many of the game sites have it aswell. I'm not really into holding peoples hand when I feel with a little effort it can be found.

Unfair. Surely the point is that Matrix should make it as obvious as possible. Having just had a look, the current set-up really isn't that obvious, and trying to find it shouldn't be some sort of test of patience. Look it up in the game menu and all you get is the Generals edition.

I found it it, too, but when we registered it was a lot easier - the blurb with the mega-campaigns (the Generals edition wasn't available then) made it clear they were pay add-ons for a free game.

wodin -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/17/2005 11:43:52 PM)

Well I went to "Games" then "WW2" then "Steel Panthers Waw" then "Downloads".

Second one down is a link to the full 8.2 games.

Not hard really.

Still, it was his "FUNNY" comment about me be unhelpfull, I wasn't trying to be. I just told him it was free, thats the best bit of advice you can give.

I'll leave it now but I know who made the snide post and it wasn't me;)

Since being here Ive offered many people advice from games to books.

ravinhood -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/18/2005 3:40:20 AM)

Remember George Carlin when he did that skit about "Have a nice day"? lol He made me laugh my ass off. "What if I don't want to have a nice dame day"? lol

wodin -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/18/2005 6:42:22 PM)

Bad day

RBWhite -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/19/2005 4:58:27 AM)

Zap -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/20/2005 7:54:13 AM)

I like to have choice too. The problem is to find enough time in my day for as many games as there are available.

ravinhood -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/20/2005 8:26:17 AM)

I thought you were retired Zap? Just do what I do sometimes, create list of the best games you enjoy, create a chit for them or number them and create number chits and then just put them all in a box or hat and draw. Play that one till you finish and then do it again. I thow in a game of "real life golf" to break the monotny of pure gaming. Golf is a great way to get excercise, the great outdoors and not a whole lot of people in your face during the weekdays. I never play on the weekends though, too many duffers and idiots. lol

Zap -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/20/2005 8:48:44 AM)

I,m old but not old enough to be retired. Work 65 hours a week. So when I get a chance I choose the games that brings me most satisfaction.
I did mention in another thread that I took a (leave) from games for fifteen years. But that was do to the direction of my life took at that time, not because I retired.
The great outdoors is a great way to get a different perspective on things I hear golf is relaxing, as have reported my friends but I've never indulged.

ravinhood -> RE: BiN or SPWAW? (3/20/2005 8:52:54 AM)

Oh yeah golf is very relaxing, no hurry, no rush (well on weekdays) and once the bug gets in you, it never goes away. When you drive that ball "straight" for the first time after slicing for about 100 times, that's when it gets yah. lol I enjoy golfing more than bowling now. Especially this time of year.
