DeepSix -> Missing LCUs (3/20/2005 7:06:46 AM)

As the AI invaded Borneo, I began pulling back Dutch units, concentrating them at Balikpapan. Finally, as the AI landed there, I set up a transport TF with approx. 24 APs and AKs -- more than enough to ferry out the 1000 or so troops left at the base. But when the TF sailed, it left a remnant of 168 total troops, even though most of the ships were less than 10% loaded. I wondered about this, but chalked it up to suppression/trying to load an LCU under duress.

When the AI attacked, the fragment retreated into Samarinda. I ordered the TF to bravely/foolishly do an about-face and head back to Samarinda to try to pick that fragment up. It docked, I gave it the load order and selected the unit. On the next turn, though, the TF left Samarinda, apparently without loading anybody. Briefly, a green LCU icon appeared on the map in the Samarinda hex. I clicked to open it and find out how many troops were still left -- 168 again.

But when I closed that info screen, the icon disappeared, and now the real puzzle is in the pic below -- the base info screen says there are 595 troops there (when there weren't that many in the fragment to begin with) and nothing shows up -- no LCU icon on the map, no LCU icon in the base summary tray at the bottom.... what's up with this?

As they are REMF troops, they are probably refusing to budge until a memo from HQ is filed properly in triplicate. Other than that, I'd say "bug".

Never noticed that before but is it possible that the LCU icon will be shown only if a t least one squad is not disabled. Plane presence will not be shown it all aircraft are disabled.

I didnt think you could load dutch units onto ships ? restricted command and all that. Did you change the HQ ?

The other thing in that disabled squads will show up as lcu on the map but wont load onto transports , I thnik yo have to wait till they are healed before moving them. Daft rule that affects both sides and its a pain trying to round up splintered units.

Well, the TF carried off a mix of Dutch and U.S. (late of the Philippines) base units, all of which were assigned to SWPAC HQ. I didn't split any of the LCUs myself, so I'm still not sure why a part of one unit wouldn't or couldn't make the boat. Can part of a unit be disabled?

The discrepancy between the 168 figure I started with and the 595/missing icon I ended up with is a complete mystery. This seems a more serious problem than simply failing to get on the boat, as I have no way of even determining which unit they belong to, or if they even still exist. Did I cause the problem myself by moving them by plane from Cebu Island or someplace? Is this another example of the limitations on unit fragment slots? Where did they go? Did they beam up?[;)]

At the moment, I'm wondering if the problem will resolve itself when the TF gets to where it's going and unloads; then there will be a parent to draw replacements, presumably? So far, it doesn't seem to be a gamestopper (although considering the time and PP I put into this strategic maneuver it doth furrow my brow very much). The AI has landed but not attacked yet, though, so it remains to be seen one way or the other. I do have a save of the turn in case it needs looking at.
