Is it any good?

To expand a little, how does it actually work? Will it sometimes send out convoys with no escort? Or even just forget about a little tiny island in the south pacific?

It just seems to me, that if i start using it, I'll gain a bad habit of relying on it too much.

you can get plenty of peoples thoughts by doing a search in the forum. I never use it, but if i were to it'd only be to large hubs. The ai sucks at most everything so i wouldnt trust it.

....ever "peek" at the AI side while playing vs AI? I've seen large (10-15) tf's with ak empty going "nowhere" without escort, full supply convoys who's route takes them literally through the enemy islands (marshals), and a whole lot more ill advised decisions.

Dont trust it.

Start small with maybe 5 key bases.
If as Japanese start with say Manila, Hong Kong, Palau, Guam and Singapore.
Then you manually move supply and oil from there to were it is needed.
I have Palambang and Brunia set to auto move the oil and resources.
I keep it simple and small and it works fine for me.

I think its pretty much commonly held opinion that the autoconvoy system sucks. I have not used it since my first game and don't beleive that I've missed much. One of the greatest dimentions of this game is supply. By shuffling it over to the AI, you would be missing a big part of what makes this thingy so great. IMHO

Welcome.
The auto-convoy system can be pretty goofy sometimes.
The way I use it is to allocate my smaller AKs and TKs to it, and turn on the bases which are not in the front line. I thus let it supply a few major supply hubs without coming into range of the enemy. Of course, once subs show up near my main supply bases, I add a few escorts to the ships allocated to auto-convoy.
From these hubs, I then form convoys with escorts to supply the bases closer to the enemy.
As to what bases are to make hubs is up to you. But generally you need ones with a decent port level.

It doesn't work. It will not do what you want. It will do what you don't want. Stay away from it.

Better yet, try it for a while, then analyze and contemplate the results that you get. After that, consider all the other key things that the AI does for you, and "be afraid, be very afraid"...[sm=00000116.gif]

Okay, I'd kind of worked out it was dreadful, and I'm now managing my own resupply... late december in 1941 and I have just taken the first main resoucrce base on my list to get - is there any way of setting up a TF to shuttle to there and back to Osaka repeatedly or do I have to give it a command each time it empties its ships at Osaka to go back again for some more?

Roger,

After setting up the convoy between Osaka and the other base (say Tokyo), change "Human Control" to "CS: Tokyo" (assuming you created the convoy in Osaka. The convoy will load at Osaka, unload at Tokyo, and repeat until USS Missouri arrives at Tokyo Bay. You will want to check the convoy periodically and swap damaged ships, since they will accumulate sys damage with continued use.

Thanks for that, saved me a lot of work.
