Rohna -> quick question... (3/26/2005 12:49:56 AM)

This may seem silly but, in China for example, will aircraft set to "naval search" spot land units within their radius?

Thanks.

Grotius -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 1:02:42 AM)

Don't think so. Best to use Recon for land units.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 1:03:43 AM)

I think that Nav Search maked units look for the nearest bodies of water completely disregarding land units.

Rohna -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 1:15:54 AM)

So if search cant spot land units how are they spotted? How is it that I see a LCU that's NOT in a base hex, or even in one for that matter, without the use of an assigned recon mission into that hex?

Sorry if this is in the manual but i just quickly looked and didnt find an awnser.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 1:21:34 AM)

It is usually the case that recon units set on "commanders discretion" will fly only to base hexes. At the same time, it is assumed that they are able to overfly formations that are not in a base hex and report their location.

Also, I beleive that the task of the "recon" mission is not so much to spot particular units but to provide increasingly specific information on them. For this reason, IIRC, if recon missions are repeatedly flown to the same hex, you will see an increasingly accurate representation of what is actually there in terms of men, guns and vehicles. This is, of course, contingent on the recon unit's experience and any interference to its mission from the enemy.

rogueusmc -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 1:45:55 AM)

I think there is a small bug that only lets recon be used in non base hexes with troops. If the recon lets you target a non base hex, there are troops there. No personal experience with this, just something I remember hearing.

Captain Ed -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 2:30:33 AM)

I can confirm that . In a PBEM I had occasion to check the signit as the Japanese player and saw a radio intercept at a hex south of I think Yunan so I sent a Babs to check it out and there was a chinese LCU there otherwise it was an empty hex.[:)]

AmiralLaurent -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 2:40:19 AM)

Perfectly true, recon missions can be flown only to enemy bases or hexes with enemy troops. If the game is refusing to send a recon mission to a empty hex, it is really empty.

I use it to recon non-base hexes but as a home rule I try only one hex a day per recon unit (simulating the fact that the mission was "flown" in any case).

Oleg Mastruko -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 3:15:14 AM)

IJAAF recon units are extremely useful, but are really too big for the task. I mean they "eat" 9 to 12 pilots each, to fly like, what, 2 a/c max per day? (Unless used for naval search that is)

So in WITP terms Laurent, I think they should be able to comfortably cover several hexes per day. Their navy colleauges cover like half of the Pacific daily [:D]

O.

Yamato hugger -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 6:18:14 AM)

Would be nice if your naval search actually only searched the water. What I mean by this is a PBY squadron flying out of Darwin for example has the same chance to spot a TF at 5 hexes as a PBY squdron out of Pearl does at 5 hexes. The Pearl squadron has to fly a 360 circle (would be VERY nice if you could direct it to cover just partial search areas like the 180 degree they used at Midway) where as the Darwin squadron only has about 180 degrees.

The Darwin squadron should have a higher chance because more planes are able to fly in a more limited area. A squadron out of Hanoi should have 5 times the chance to spot.

Captain Ed -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 8:49:52 AM)

What you say is interesting I had not given it that much thought when assigning naval search missions are you sure about the chances of spotting being the same regardless of the search arc. I mean how can you tell the odds[&:]

bradfordkay -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 9:03:20 AM)

You have only a certain number of aircraft in a squadron ordered to perform a naval search. Using them to search a 360 degree arc will result in each plane having to cover twice the territory than when assigned to cover a 180 degree arc, increasing the likelihood that there will be gaps in the area covered, as well as the size of those gaps.

Rohna -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 1:52:47 PM)

So naval search will not search land, recon units will only target base hexes or hexes with a visable LCU in it (bugs excluded)..... so how then do I even see an enemy LCU at all? What tells me there is a unit in a hex?

Im inquiring because I'd like to be able to search for "forming up points" of enemy troops, in non-base areas, at least a couple of hexes away from my line to prevent a supprise attack. But from what i am reading there is no way of finding (seeing) these concentrations. Is this right or am i missing something??

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 2:00:43 PM)

In my experience naval search also spot land units.

In an earlier post in this thread someone referenced checking the sigintell. They noticed radio traffic at a supposedly empty hex, sent recon and found a chinese LCU. Check your sigintell. Bodhi's Utility is great for this.

erstad -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 11:02:21 PM)

There are differening points of view as to whether/how you should use this information, but the "w" key that shows zones of control can alert you to troop movements as well.

mogami -> RE: quick question... (3/26/2005 11:05:32 PM)

Hi, I don't worry if the "w" key reports enemy movement or my recon will only target hexes that have enemy units in them. I suppose I have patrols out (and the enemy does as well) that let me know where to assign recon or at least alert me "something" is out there.
