Yakstock -> PBEM Playback (3/27/2005 4:27:02 AM)

I just realized (due to my computer locking up) something about PBEMs. One thing I liked about games like CMBO or CMBB or live internet play like HTTR is that there is no ability to cheat. One of the reasons I don’t like (and now don't own) hex based igougo games is the ability for players to replay their turns endlessly in PBEM until they like the outcome. I was under the assumption this game was one of those that did not allow such a thing since it was a wego approach. I have not played many PBEM yet but those I had played I was always the second player (i.e. not the one setting the game up). In these situations no matter how many times I watch the replay it is the same since it is not actually playing but just “replaying”. In a recent game where I set it up, I had the game lock after playing the turn. When I replayed it I realized that the result came out different. So it seems the first player to watch is not watching a done deal, but is watching something that could play out differently each time. This is a disappointment to me as it opens the game up to the ability to replay it as many times as I would like until I like the outcome. I would strongly suggest if at all possible, and even if it required emailing the file more times, that the actual playing of the turn (versus “replaying of the turn) be blind, and that any replay send by either player be a done deal and not alterable by multiple playbacks.

I'm not quite sure I understand.

The play is fixed in FPG and cannot be changed. Only a 'vcr' file is sent back to run a script that shows the other player how things resolved. You saw something happen differently. Could I trouble you to tell me a bit more about it? Were you player 1 or player 2? Which nationality were you? The random number generator is locked so that the actual turn resolution is the same each time. Is that what you are talking about or about the vcr replay?

I'll be less tired tomorrow and will look again at this.

Thanks, Rob

Yakstock -> RE: PBEM Playback (3/27/2005 5:39:32 AM)

I was the player who set up the game. It was about the fifth turn of the game. I played out the replay and before I could do anything else it locked up. So I openned it up again and did the replay over. The situation was different at the end of the replay the second time. Certain units survived that did not before, and certain units of the enemy were not visible that were visible before. I believe certain attacks even happened that did not before. I did not take any screen prints since I did not expect it to be different. I also have not tried it any more (to recreate it) as I thought it was different by design. If this is not the case I will do some morte testing of it...

I did some more testing - I dropped you an email so I can send you some screen captures. I am glad to hear (I thinnk) that at least it is not supposed to be this way as I do enjoy the game.

I was going to suggest that you make it pre-roll the results. I've had plenty of PBEM turns where I had to reload due to family interuptions (a replay would be nice) and noticed the results were different. Both with units being spotted and artillery results.
