My first thought is German "alpenjager", alpine troops. But the guy in the front is carrying a bren gun like weapon??

Hehe, wrong I think.

I believe its a Czech made ZB26 (possibly ZB30). The gun on which the Bren was based. So my guess is German Mountain troops, some where in Austria or Czechoslovakia.

Note the picture of the German troops to your Bren picture - the muzzle is different, that's not a Bren muzzle. At least it looks different from what I can tell.

late WW2 Germans.

2nd line troops hunting for Partisans. These were often "foreign" troops in SS service. These could be Indians... The skin tone is dark but its hard to tell. I think there was an Indian unit.

Weapon looks like the Czech ZB30, which was used by these troops and still manufactured during the war (I don't have complete details and don't have time to Google).

I think it is German Mountain Troops of the 7th SS Mountain Division Prinz Eugen somewhere in the former Yougoslavia.[:)]

Guy on the right has the typical headgear of a German NCO. Cammo uniforms were rather scarce, so not 2nd line troops. Definetly not Indian troops - although there was an 'Indische Legion' made up from ex-POWs captured in North Africa, but they were originally destined to help Bose to liberate India and when the Axis plans for India failed, they were used in Holland and nothern France (not many mountains there) as construction workers for field fortifications. So I say those guys are German Gebirgsjäger or Paras, maybe in Italy.

The helmet is the wrong shape for paratroopers. The camo patter was rare so due to this and the terrain I am going to guess members of the Herman Goering Division in Italy.

But, Herman Goering was a Panzer Division wasn't it? That's not exactly tank terrain.

Prinz Eugen Divishion, is quiet likely, while the Image source does not say so spicificaly the Image source does sight the location and the image is mid war. This shot is a favorate of mine, I love the feal of it and the scenary. Cammo uniforms were common for various branches of the German armed forces depending on the time frame(and service), while it is hard to tell when in black and white the SS paterns were still very distinctave.
Their were many Forgine SS units, but they would not realy be considered as second line, except perhaps the Muselum unit formed in the Balkins, they were volinters and comprised hard fighting and dedicated units that were equiped to SS Standards and faught in many cases till the bitter end.

BigB, I run a "Name This..." on three forums, the subject mater is not alwyas the same given the constraints of this Forum to keep it largely Pacific theater oreniated, I only run 'Other' pictures when I find a particulary interesting one I want to share despite it being off topic.

Didn't say that, just that the Indian Legion saw almost no combat. Last defenders of the Führerbunker/Reichskanzlei in Berlin were French and Scandinavian Waffen-SS. SS troops knew that they would be shot anyway when surrendering to the Russians, so they kept fighting to the end.

LargeSlowTarget, my coments were not nescessarly directed toward you, indead I had forgoten that the Indian troops were uesd in the capacity you mentioned.


wild_Willie2, It is tough to say, it is rare that a picture does not get identified on any forum, but I would say that more are missed on the WW2 Online forum then hear or in Aces High. I think that may be because of the fact that a lot of folks dont visit the History forum on the WW2 Online sight regularly.
