Marine Corps on Kamikaze? Thats New.[:D][:D][:D][:D]

Lord_Calidor -> RE: Subversives brainwashing my units. (4/3/2005 10:09:29 PM)

Guess they were all stumbling about at ships and stuff during their night sorties, so brass decided to put them to some good use. [:)]

bradfordkay -> RE: Subversives brainwashing my units. (4/3/2005 10:23:06 PM)

I think that they had all busted their legs on the knee knockers during transport to Eniwetok and have decided to go after the navy before they are removed from flying status...

All Marines are kamikazes at heart![:D]

It should clear when you get that part back to the main unit. What's happened is it landed in a slot that had been used by a japanese air unit and it didn't clear out the setting.

Training of a kamikaze pilot..........isn't that rather redundant?

Yep, that has in fact happened. Kamakaze jarheads tackled, shackled and reprogrammed with Semper Fidelis. I kicked the honorable Sons of Heaven off of Eniwetok ages ago. Why does the game still have uncleared slots?

Just hope your group are real quick learners and that you train in single file formation as opposed to line abreast.[;)]

Cause "C" is a brutal language? [:D]

Seriously, "C" has a nasty habit. If you don't explicitly clear a memory location, it will retain what happened to be there prior to it's use ... has been the cause of many bugs.

For budding programmers:
It is good programming practice to clear your variables/structures/arrays before using them.[:D]
Never trust the compiler to always initialise variables. Seriously.

C is Brutal Ray? Ever tried programming in COBOL? I hate C, but I hate COBOL even more.

michaelm75au -> RE: Subversives brainwashing my units. (4/5/2005 12:43:51 PM)

I was brought up on COBOL and FORTRAN. (at home and university)
COBOL took a bit of getting use to .. all those SECTIONs and things.[X(]
Took forever before you could ever start cutting code.

Now adays, cut code first. And then worry about all those missing and un-initialised variables.[:D]

Tankerace -> RE: Subversives brainwashing my units. (4/5/2005 12:49:10 PM)

When I learned COBOL.... I learned, rather painfully, not to debug from the bottom. I don't know how many times I screwed up a basically good COBOL program I did because I forgot to debug top down. OOPS. [:D]

rhohltjr -> Cobol, C Fortran.... (4/5/2005 3:23:45 PM)

Anyone still use Cobol? or Fortran? I learned with Pascal and *** Ada ***. Now I program 'C' the brutal and work through mountains of paper[>:].

....so I escape by training US Marine Kamakazes.
[:)]

Mr.Frag -> RE: Cobol, C Fortran.... (4/5/2005 6:29:24 PM)

Most things have go to SQL based engines, very little COBAL left apart from the government who take forever to do anything.

Feinder -> RE: Cobol, C Fortran.... (4/6/2005 6:30:31 PM)

I 've done quite a bit of Cobol programming. Our shop started almost exclusively COBOL, but is now split about half-n-half between mainframe and client-server/web (fortunately, I now live in client-server/web land). But in it's defense, while Cobol is old, and certainly not as pretty as .net and it's umbrella, it serves a purpose.

Most large businesses have COBOL apps (esp if they need a mainframe). Most of it is legacy code, but it's still out there. As powerful as SQL-server and client-server tech has become, it's -still- no where near as powerful as even a mediocre mainframe. If you've got to batch up 120 million accounts, and do your debits and credits in 2 minutes or less, you use COBOL.

That being said, conversions are being made, and COBOL -is- on the decrease (but not nearly as dramatically as people claim). Folks said COBOL would be dead by 1980, 35 years ago. It lasted into the 90s, and even thru Y2k. There's even a COBOL.net now (* which just makes me blink, they did what?*). Most companies need to process large numbers of transactions in batch at some point. And that's exactly what Cobol and DB2 are best suited for. It has a place. And to a large degree, there's no justification for to spend the money necessary to redevelope a legacy system in newer code, when there isn't anything wrong with the old code (aside from periodic updates).
