Lonewolfpj -> I just got a new pc what war games should I get (4/11/2005 10:36:13 PM)

I was told that I might want to get Rome: Total war and Enigma Rising tide. Does any one recomed these games or anything else. I have a loaded system so I can handle any game on the market.

Also has any one heard anything about a game called Imperial Glory?

Lucifuge -> RE: I just got a new pc what war games should I get (4/11/2005 11:03:30 PM)

Wouldnt really call Engima a war game more a first person shooter type naval sim. Silent Hunter 3 is far superior fyi.

ditto, scratch enigma.. SH3 is maybe the best simulator ever....
do you want strategy? pbem?
rtw is ok forstrategy.. and very enjoyable.. but not pbem compatible.. I think some try online??
I would recommend GGWAW WITP and TAO4/Normandy for pbem games...

I'll agree with the other guys--Silent Hunter III has some steep PC requirements, but it's the top-of-the-line for PC sims right now. Go here: http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/index.php for more input from the players.

SH 3 for a sim.

Then it depends on what kind of wargame you want. Do you like turn based, WEGO or RTS. Do you like tactical, operational or Grand Strategy?

Coming to this forum you will find many recommending Matrix games.

Most Popular Matrix games I can see are (in no particular order).

Steel Panthers World at War (Tactical turn based. FREE. Massive following)

Gary Grigsbys World at War (Grand Strategy)

War in the PAcific (Operational and a real die hard grognards game. Not for a beginner or the light hearted)

Tin Soldiers (Tactical Ancients game. A PC version of a tabletop style game)

Highway to the Reich (Operational Continous time game. Not many people buy this and dont like it).

Battles in Normandy (Turn based operational game)

HPS games.

Panzer Campaign Series (Operational with a tactical bent. Many to choose from. Turn based and not that pretty but lots of depth)

Squad Battles series (Tactical turn based. My favourite)

Civil War series (operational similar play as PZC)

Other games.

Civil War Bull Run. (Looks similar to Imperial Glory is cheap and many love the game)

The operational Art Of War Century of Warfare (A Golden oldie. Turn based. Loads of sceanrios. Operational. Can be bought from Naval And Warship)

West Front or East Front 2 (Another oldie. Tactical game.)

Close Combat Series (Best RTS games ever made period. My all time favourite)

Medeaval Total War (Older than Rome but many seem to refer it)

Combat Mission Series. (My favourite was CMBB. WEGO).

Then you have your many RTS games. Lots of WW2 games released but I'm no expert on what to buy. Codename Panzer seems to have favourable reviews buy those who like them.

Thing with wargames on awhole they dont require huge systems. SIMS and FPS games do.

P>S Imperial Glory has a demo out and which has recieved very poor reviews. Most likely a stay away.

I have never been interested in Napoleonic wargaming, but I downloaded the demo for Imperial Glory and I am very impressed!

If anyone can recommend a Napoleonic wargame better than Imperial Glory then I am keen to hear about it.

Joe did you download the hack that lets you play as the Austrians? Makes the Hanover scenario very very tough to win.[8D] Check the forum on the game site.

Fred98 -> RE: I just got a new pc what war games should I get (4/12/2005 6:08:47 AM)

I only downloaded the stock standard version.

As for the Hanoverian battle, I was learning the controls ( which are very simple Doh! [sm=00000003.gif]) when his infantry charged my guns.

I had my own infantry respond but their LOS was cut by the slope of the ground – and the guns were lost [:(]

Lesson: Always protect your guns with infantry

And I had 2 squadrons of cavalry attack his – the British are superior after all. But the battle was even and all the cavalry of both sides were lost

Lesson: Pin the enemy infantry with yours and save the cavalry to attack infantry from an unexpected flank

In the meantime I was moving the remaining infantry forward when he attacked with infantry from an unexpected angle. It was carnage till they could form up and return fire.

Lesson: Always protect your flanks

If I were talking WW2 wargaming – the same lessons still apply

Cool! Before you know it, you'll be reading the Sharpe's books and re-enacting as one of the 95th Light Infantry. [;)]

ravinhood -> RE: I just got a new pc what war games should I get (4/13/2005 3:41:19 AM)

If you're going to become a true wargamer, well then, you're just going to have to buy/get them all. ;) There's no real best one, because everyone is different and has differnent likes and styles of play. So, just get out your credit card (and I hope you're not married) and start buying them all. Then you can enjoy the fun many of us have each gaming session trying to decide which one to play. lol

DamoclesX -> RE: I just got a new pc what war games should I get (4/13/2005 7:51:29 PM)

Silent Hunter 3
Gary Gisbys World at War
Starshatter
War in the PAcific
Direct Action act of war

Hmm those are what I play mainly these days

Lonewolfpj -> RE: I just got a new pc what war games should I get (4/14/2005 1:39:30 AM)

quote:

Direct Action act of war
I was looking at that game the other day what makes it stand out over some of the other RTS games.

I wanted to that everyone again for all of your help[&o] Keep the ideas flowing

DamoclesX -> RE: I just got a new pc what war games should I get (4/14/2005 5:53:14 AM)

Hmm
to keep it simple, its what command and conqure generals should have been, a game where tactics and a bit of planning actually pay off, tank rushes can be stopped easy, and infantry is really usefull

I think we have a discussion about it in an rts thread on this page somehwere

Vyshka -> RE: I just got a new pc what war games should I get (4/24/2005 1:21:38 PM)

When Empires In Arms makes it out, and Crown of Glory too. I imagine they will both be better than Imp Glory.
