These pages are from the book Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War (look here)

I strongly recommend it.

Thanks Marc - though I still wonder why this link - and the WITP game designers "think" type 13s were installed on Kit & Oi pre-war ...

The same source indicating Oi and Kitikami starting the war with radar also lists various Yugumo class DDs as getting air search radars in the spring of 42. Several of them accompanied Kido Butai to Midway.
I've forgotten exactly where but there is a published account on the web somewhere of Admiral Nagumo's report of the Battle of Midway which includes minute by minute (log???) entries during the American air attacks on Kido Butai. Though there are literally hundreds of entries reporting visual sightings there is not one that indicates that any ship reported a radar contact on any of the American aircraft.
That would seem to indicate either the radars 1) weren't there or
2) weren't used or 3) weren't tied in to the air defense chain of command or 4) weren't functioning at all.

Or they just were not in the report....

Yep - definitely a mystery - if we could either trace the "primary" source for these early radars and / or show there is no source and someone just made it up - then we'd be getting somewhere.

You never know. Sometimes people play telephone.
