Copper -> Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 5:27:12 AM)

Edit from Erik: If you are experiencing this, please try the Managed DirectX installation about ten posts down in this thread.

After the game is downloaded and installed i go to play it, and when I click play it just says Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Click OK to terminate the application. Click CANCEL TO DEBUG the application. Yet, Cancel doesnt work, what am I doing wrong?

petdoc -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 5:41:27 AM)

Im getting the same error as you. I think someone screwed up at DR or Matrix

CamelCity -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 5:46:27 AM)

petdoc -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 5:48:53 AM)

Thats the one, thanks for posting the shot. Unfortunately I suspect that this may not get looked at till tomorrow am. Oh well, need to be all rested to watch 24 tonight anyway.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 6:23:30 AM)

Hi everyone,

Are you sure you let it run the DirectX setup (said Yes) so that it would install Managed DirectX as required? If you have any doubts, go to the /redist sub-folder and double click on the mdxredist.msi file. Let me know if that helps.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 6:25:29 AM)

Anyone having these problems, please post your Operating System and version and ideally a DxDiag file please.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 6:50:03 AM)

Let me know if the work-around above (installing the .msi file manually) solves the problem for those that are having it. Also, please post the .log file from your /Log sub-directory if you are experiencing this. Thanks agian, sorry for the inconvenience. We'll definitely have whatever the problem is worked out tomorrow.

Regards,

- Erik

GreenDestiny -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 7:20:22 AM)

I click on both files in the /redist sub-folder the mddxredist says preparing to install but nothing happens I waited for around five minutes and the InstMsiA says Error Wrong OS or OS version for application

Edit post: because it was an eye sore

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 7:22:44 AM)

Ok, researching what could be going on here...

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 8:13:48 AM)

If you're experiencing this problem and have a bit of time, please try this and let me know if it makes a difference for you:

1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=10
2. Click on the DirectX 9.0c Redistributable for Software Developers and go through the process to download it
3. Run it to extract the files to a directory of your choice.
4. Within that directory, create a shortcut that points to dxsetup.exe and gives it this additional parameter (on the Target line of the shortcut): /installmanageddx (so the target line should read something like "dxsetup.exe" /installmanageddx)
5. Double click on the shortcut, let it execute and let me know if that resolves the problem. If so, something went very, very wrong (at least on some installations) with the setup within the installer (which does exactly what I've described, just automatically from the included DirectX files rather than forcing you to do it) since we tested it.

Thanks in advance for anyone that can go through this for me and report the results. I apologize for all the steps, but I can't duplicate the problem here so I need your help to narrow this down.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 8:16:46 AM)

A second option for users to try is the attached alternate exe which has a slightly different start up resolution configuration screen. Please drop this into your installation directory and let me know if it resolves the issue.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 8:43:25 AM)

Update: Please try unzipping these two files into your installation directory if you are having problems.

Edited: Please try the Managed DirectX installer a few posts below.

pahom -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 8:51:42 AM)

Hi Eric,

I tried adding these two files and got the same exact error.

Any more ideas?

Thanks

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 8:53:31 AM)

Pahom,

I'm unfortunately out of ideas until the morning. I've forwarded everything to the Koios folks and we'll be up early to make sure a solution is posted as soon as we can find out what the problem is. Thank you for your patience, I apologize for the inconvenience. Our own testing went without a hitch, so right now I'm at a loss as to what happened unless this is some kind of weird file corruption that got into the store. I will post more on this in the morning.

Regards,

- Erik

GreenDestiny -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 8:58:55 AM)

I got it to work it’s a little bit different than Eriks way. What at I did was after I downloaded DirectX 9.0c Redistributable for Software Developers is to go into ManagedDX archive/folder and then click on mdxredist.msi and let it run . The game works now.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 10:21:03 AM)

GreenDestiny,

Thanks, for confirmation could you please post the date/time info of the mdxredist.msi file that worked for you? If this is an issue of the wrong version of Managed DirectX making its way into the installer, the good news is it's easy to fix and to work-around.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 10:27:39 AM)

Use this if you are experiencing a problem starting the game:

Managed DirectX Installer: unzip and double-click on the attached file.

Updated: Please use the file from the pinned thread in this forum.

GreenDestiny -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 10:33:55 AM)

Yep... Thats the right one.

pahom -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 12:18:08 PM)

Thanks, that worked for me.

TheWombat_matrixforum -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 2:15:16 PM)

Tried this, nothing. No error message, but no game, either. Just sits there.

EDIT: But then I uninstalled the game, reinstalled...and it works. Mirabile dieu!

petdoc -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 5:31:27 PM)

Worked great. Thanks for your speedy service. Any idea what went wrong?

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 5:35:59 PM)

We're still trying to figure that out, honestly. As soon as we know for sure what caused the problem and that we have a 100% solution for the installer (not just the manual fix) then we will update the version on the online store (it will happen today, just not sure when due to the additional testing we're doing to make sure this is resolved), so that anyone who is interested can re-download a copy without this issue.

We'll also be posting the mdxredist.msi file in the Games -> Downloads section for Julius Caesar for anyone that doesn't want to or can't re-download.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 5:38:26 PM)

I should add that the game on demand boxed versions, when available, will not have this issue as they will be using whatever updated installer we come up with today.

Regards,

- Erik

Marathon -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/26/2005 8:59:53 PM)

I had the same problem but that attached msi file did the trick.

offbase -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/27/2005 6:09:34 AM)

It did the trick, but there are still issues, such as a Direct X utility loading before the game will play. Will this effect OTHER games using Direct X? How soon can we expect a patch? Also, I'm having big problems video wise, even though I'm running an AMD 64 chip, 500+ mg RAM, Win XP, and a NVidia GoForce 440 card with 64 mg of dedicated memory -- the mouse/cursor is out of sync, and attacking opponents on their second move turn into indiscernable "squares" that block out everything visually. I meet the video card requirement, and far exceed all other requirements ... what gives???

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/27/2005 6:19:30 AM)

FYI, an updated version is already available in the store. If you purchased within the first 18 hours or so, you can go to www.findmyorder.com and re-download the game to get the version that does not require the patch.

As far as your question, I'm not aware of any DirectX utility running each time you run the game. Can you be more specific?

Regards,

- Erik

beserko -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/27/2005 6:55:36 PM)

Bought this 5 minutes ago and I can't get by the video resolution screen and yes I did download the directx update. Does anyone ever try to use the file they sell on direct download? [:@]

Erik Rutins -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/27/2005 7:58:18 PM)

beserko,

Yes, we do test and we'll need more information from you to figure out what's wrong in your case. There are so many PC configurations out there that it's impossible to test each one.

You say you can get to the resolution screen but not past it? That means it's not likely to be an installer issue but that the game may be having trouble detecting your video settings.

Please post a DxDiag file and the latest .log file from your /log subdirectory. Between those two, we should be able to determine what's gong on. See the pinned instructions in this forum if you need help with either file.

Regards,

- Erik

beserko -> RE: Problems starting the game? (4/27/2005 8:39:20 PM)

ok, I got it to work. I ran the mdxredist072004.msi file in the redist folder, then I crossed my fingers. Before ,it would let me set my card (geforce6000) and the resolution but was blank on the 16/32 bit and the refresh rate. Clicking finish gave me the exception error.
If I didn't know about these forums and knew my way around a computer I would have been S out of luck.
Still, maybe I was a little out of line with that comment.
BTW game looks great! been waiting for a while for it to come out.
