I normally hate purchasing download only games as it is a real pain to reliably download 200MB+ files and not have any problems. Well,, this game looked different enough to give a try. I tied up my computer and phone for the last 24hrs to download the game. Now during installation it gives me nothing but "unknown decompression error" starting with the TSJC_Manual_[EBOOK].pdf and every file afterwards. It appears the file got corrupted during the download. I can't afford to tie up my phone and computer for another 24hrs straight again to redownload the game. For all I know I'll end up with the same problem. I regrettably must request a refund.

Bssy, Digital Download imo is not designed for dial-up. The slightest line hiccup will kill you.

There's ample warning here to make use of free download utilities such as Star Downloader which both quicken the download process and ensure re-start capability in the need you need to interrupt the transfer of files.

Any download imo under 250 megs imo is reasonable for a hassle free download experience with broadband/fast internet but in your case I'd have awaited the physical box.

Get Star Downloader and try again. Spread your effort over a couple of nights.

Adam,

Actually I did use Star Downloader and it appeared to go through successfully. I got no errors while downloading using Star and the file is the correct size, the installer just gives constant decompression errors when attempting the install. It installs Microsft .Net and the DX9.0c ok, but once it reaches the application, it bombs out. My guess is I did have some type of hiccup during the 24 hrs and that hosed me.

Bssy, I felt your frustration to start with but now doubly so and at me for my assuming you attempted the download otherwise. I remember downloading one of UV's patches around 50 megs dial up and it wasn't fun at all. Refund still does sound extreme. Best of luck.

Marc von Martial -> RE: Extremely Disapointed (4/27/2005 12:01:19 PM)

Hi, do you run any virus scanners or firewalls in the background when you try to install the application?

bssy -> RE: Extremely Disapointed (4/27/2005 7:44:57 PM)

Thanks for the response. No virus scanner or firewalls running. The only thing remotely related would be a pop-up blocker, but since I'm not connected to the Net while installing that shouldn't be an issue.

TheHellPatrol -> RE: Extremely Disapointed (4/27/2005 8:17:56 PM)

[&:]Maybe this will help you: when i dd'd and installed Tin Soldiers: Alexander the installer asked if i wanted to install "Microsoft Net Framework", i said WTF is that? No...[8|]i didn't know that i NEEDED to have "Microsoft Net Framework" for TSATG to work and i had all kinds of errors trying to run the game before uninstalling and reinstalling "with" "Net Framework". That solved it for me, i hope this helps[:)].

Erik Rutins -> RE: Extremely Disapointed (4/27/2005 8:41:00 PM)

bssy,

Have you ever downloaded anything this large before? Unfortunately, even with Stardownloader a dial-up connection is not a guarantee that it will work on the first download. We list the download time for customers in the store info for the product so that a decision can be made if a download is feasible. If not, we offer the shipped boxed version (which will be available for Caesar later this week). If you absolutely can't get this downloaded, please e-mail us at support@matrixgames.com and ask us to arrange for a boxed copy, which we may be able to do on a rare basis through working with the online store folks.

Regards,

- Erik

TheHellPatrol,

Yeah, I saw the installation of .NET and I did select it. Strange that .NET installed fine, it's just the game files that don't install.

Did you dd it right after release? Digital River has been known to make little "boo boos" with new releases and maybe something was FUBAR at the time of download. If i was you i would go through this process:
a) check for updates for your PC and Windows OS(yeah, yeah...i know[8|][;)])
b) defrag your harddrive AFTER uninstalling Tin Soldiers and check for errors/viruses
c) with "stardownloader" in hand re-download and try it again.
Chances are it won't happen again and if it does then there are more nefarious devices at work[sm=00000619.gif]...Good Luck!

fyi, I was able to scare up a laptop with a burner and access to high speed internet. I downloaded, burned and successfully installed the game. Thanks for all the support! Btw, this game is really fun, I always wanted to get into miniatures but never had the space, time or available opponents. This game overcomes all those barriers.

@Matrix: you guys gotta slow down[;)][:D]

Erik Rutins -> RE: Extremely Disapointed (4/29/2005 9:15:59 PM)

Bssy,

Very glad to hear you are gaming happily now. Enjoy.

HellPatrol,

Slow down? Just went over the release schedule today, heck, we're speeding up! [X(]
