I just read the posts under " planes on ASW ".

What really is the best altitude for bombing, search and ASW Warfare?
I send my PBY's at 5000 ft and my bombers at 7000 ft.

what is really the best altitudes ???

The best altitudes are high, medium and low. Honest! [8D]

Below 6000 (from previous posts) and you incur higher ops losses. The best altitude is the one that works for you!

Since there are no concrete guideline in the manual, this is what I tend to use.

Naval Search at 6,000 feet.

ASW flights at 1,000 feet.

Bombing is very variable. I ususally start at 20,000 or higher to see what oposition I
run into. If there seems to be a lot of flak, I stay high until I can do something about
it, ususally a long term high altitude bombing campaign. If I must damage the base
in a hurry, then start at 12,000 and work down to 8,000.

That is what works for me, but your milage may vary. [:D]

[edit] fixed that pesky upsidedown W [8D]

This is very close to what I do. Go high to avoid flak, come down for results. And so much depends on defending CAP and what escorts you have.

Grotius -> RE: At What Alttude ? (5/5/2005 5:09:17 AM)

Also, the altitude of dive- and torpedo-bombers determines the altitude at which the plane eats flak, not that at which it delivers its payload. So you can set your Vals to 18,000 feet; they'll still dive very low to bomb.

In addition, dive bombers set to higher than 15,000 feet will attack in groups of 9, making for fewer but bigger attacks (against high-value targets); those set lower will attack in groups of 4, preferable for a lot of smaller targets.

For CAP, I adjust it depending on what the other guy is doing. If he always bombs at 6000 feet, then 6000 feet is my CAP.

I'm not sure what to suggest about altitude for escorts. I'd be interested in other players' wisdom on this.

Nomad -> RE: At What Alttude ? (5/5/2005 5:15:16 AM)

Escort altitude does not make any real difference becasue they will adjust their altitude to the bombers they are escorting.

I give them a high altitude, 20,000 feet since ususally I have some on CAP and I like my cap to be able to dive on the bombers right away. If I have multiple groups on CAP I will stagger them from about 10,000 to 24,000 feet. Note that most of your CAP will have to take off and climb to intercept altitude.

I forgot about the dive bombers, I use 12,000 feet if I think I am going to hit transports of some kind, and 16,000 feet if I think I will be hitting CAs and CVs( BBs I try not to have dive bombers hit [:(] )

Something I would suggest very strongly is to open a game and look at both the grond unit and naval unit aa gun charts. Sometimes just setting your altitude 1000 feet higher can make a difference on what flak you are taking and your bombing accuracy will not suffer too much.
