Yeah, I've seen this happen in long campaign battles in 8.3, too. The worst part is, it even occasionally happens to my USMC guys, too. I suppose it's an instance of panic, with the troops getting so disorganized that they retreat the wrong way. The only thing I can hope for (as the USMC, that is), is placing a tank next to that hex, and hoping that the Gyrenes recover enough suppression to move them into the friendly hex in the next turn. No, it isn't restricted to just the Japanese. This weird "retreating forward" bit happens to other countries, too.
