enric_herrera -> Japanese retreat into attaking unit hex (5/9/2005 4:34:56 PM)

Hi all

Playing Guadalcanal I found many times that japanese units retreat into the hex where they were fired from, i.e into my attaking US unit.
This seems rare no?. The worse is that if the attaking unit has no more fire that turn, the two units rest staked on the same hex.
Firing from others units, on other hexes, would probably wound my owe unit (sure). Ending the turn gives the retreated japanese unit the opportunity to fire first, resulting on advantage to the retreting unit. The staked jap unit fires, and my opportunity fire could no done because it could wound my owe unit.

I hope to have explained more o less the situation. I never see this on MGLV, is this an "hability" of the japanese?.

Yeah, I've seen this happen in long campaign battles in 8.3, too. The worst part is, it even occasionally happens to my USMC guys, too. I suppose it's an instance of panic, with the troops getting so disorganized that they retreat the wrong way. The only thing I can hope for (as the USMC, that is), is placing a tank next to that hex, and hoping that the Gyrenes recover enough suppression to move them into the friendly hex in the next turn.

No, it isn't restricted to just the Japanese. This weird "retreating forward" bit happens to other countries, too.

Hi, It is because units retreat towards their HQ and to certain preset mapedge hexes.
Once battle starts it is common for units to have enemy units between their location and their HQ. If forced to retreat they have to pass through enemy.

Placing a tank nearby?, where are tanks?.
I'm 16-17 scenarios deep into campaign and I did see any tank.
For now on, this campaign is becoming frustrating, loosing a fresh USMC because a routing jap has stacked with it is not amusing and, probably not real.
On some scenarios, when USMC are defending, use to happen too often.

I can imagine a retreating force trying to pass through the enemy who are firing at him.
On AH Squad Leader these are called berseks or something like this.

You will see a few tanks in some of the later scenarios. There were Stuarts and some Japaneee tanks in the fight for Guadalcanal.

Retreating towards you is simply a tool to indicate the frustration, anger and confusion of the enemy. In moments of violent rage and total desperation, the Japanese did such things. Of course to us, rationally it makes no sense. Neither does pulling the pin on a grenade and then sitting on it! [X(]

A Japanese unit starts out the scenario mixed with Americans? In only one scenario does that occur and he is a prisoner who is guiding the USMC force under Colonel Goettge to some supposed Japanese who want to surrender. It was a trap and it is a trap in this scenario. The prisoner cannot be killed by the Americans but he can be (and was) killed by Japanese fire.

Other than that, I don't know of it being in any other scenario. In which battle did this occur?
