ROSLEY -> Climax 42 campaign battle ... nor realistic ? (5/15/2005 7:01:00 PM)

Hello
In my 41 / 42 campaign we just had the 42 climax battle March 42 near Wake

2 hex range

4 Jap CV v 5 Allied CV

200 planes lost on each side ...fair enough
2 jap CV probably sunk , two damaged ...fair enough
Yorktown ...one torp ..lucky me.

My point is that no jap fighters escorted the bombers ( 200 ) , why could that have been , I am the allies . I wonder if all the Escorts got drawn back as CAP as the range was only two hexes .[&:]

Sometime the fighters get separated from the bombers as IRL. Or maybe you're opponent just screwed up and was resting his fighters not thinking you were around.

The real and unsolvable problem is that this is a strategic game covering 5 years of war that can be decisivly influenced by a single lucky occurance. What can you do. Midway was a very lucky battle. We like to believe it was all due to US brilliance but basically what happened is one group of bombers showed up at exactly the perfect moment and creamed the JP carriers. What luck!! You find four carriers with NO CAP AT ALL AND NOTHING BUT PLANES REFUELING ON THE DECK!!!! Had they shown up 10 minute earlier or later or had they failed to find the carriers at all the battle would have been a US defeat.

You just have to accept that any carrier battle is a roll of the dice. One side is going to get lucky and the other guy is going to feel cheated. And you will only have a few of these battles over the course of the game so the luck will not even out. Thats why I never want to fight a carrier battle at anything close to equal odds.

I agree with you to some extent my opponent has still not given me his story but the feeling I get is that if there were say 80 Zero on CAP ( which there were ) then I assume the rest are dedicated to escorts that never showed up .
I can accept what you say there was a lot of luck involved but here we are talking about very experienced pilots at very short range , I could accept some of them being missing but all of them is a bit tall .

You may be interested to know that I lost 200 planes ( about 20 to flak ) despite having about 30 or 40 Wildcats to about 80 Zero . I imagine the pilot capability was about the same .

Michael

Actually crazy results are realistic

Dauntlesses cream Japanese CVs at Midway

US Navy lets Japanese BBs into Leytey Gulf

Japanese suprise and destroy multiple Allied Cruiser TFs at Guadal Canal.

There is no such thing as an average result in a naval battle.

Looks like un-coordination rule kicking in to me ...

Finally time to look forums :) I am the (unlucky) opponent. I was ready for CV vs CV combat as I was outside my search ranges and operating in hostile waters. I had 60% CAP for all fighters in my CV's.

But, one thing I noticed was that my fighters were still directed to Pearl Harbor as I never really had not realised that it might have effect and have not noticed the possiblity to give targets for excorts. This could wery well explain the result.

Anyway, result for this is that I am not quite sure if I have any resonable chances for a even minor defeat after this battle as from now allied will have air supremacy where ever he brings he's CV's. And my opponent had those 5 CV's, but I had a bit over 400 planes in my carriers.

If your fighter have orders to fly escort to PH, they will only escort raids to PH. Their status during this battle was then:

_ 60 % CAP
_ 40 % waiting for PH to be in range and a raid to be launched.
