during

Hadrian helmets.
introduced in 1915 or so, replacing the red cap (called kepi) and all of a sudden, the headwound rate dropped quite a lot.

Still in use in 1940 in french and belgian armies, maybe also dutch.
Juin's expeditonary' s corps in Italy had still a lot of those. you must have seen these pictures of french marroccan troops (goumiers) going into battle with mules but also us halftracks.
efficient though, these mules.

I used to have one of those helmets and the piece of junk is little more than tin!.No protection from shrapnel whatsoever!..I suppose it kept folks from getting banged on the head by falling dirt,and darned little else!
BTW,The Polish army also used this helmet..

oi_you_nutter -> RE: Name This Unlimited...(20) (5/30/2005 9:23:02 AM)

I was having difficulty deciding if it was WW1 or WW2 era French troops especialy as I did not see the UE carrier .. what a twit I was for missing that

ref steel helmets

there was documentary, possibly "Battlefield Detectives" that said the british battle bowler was not as good protection as the german WWI steel helmet because of the way it was manufactured, was it the same problem with the French helmets ?

Blum -> RE: Name This Unlimited...(20) (5/30/2005 9:59:03 PM)

French helmets were better than UK helmets, which didi'nt protect you much against shrapnel that didn't come back vertically.
German helmets gave a far better protection. In the end, that shape became the one now used everywhere....

Also Italy and maybe Romania used Hadrian helmets (in ww1
)

found on "westernfront.co.uk"

1. Steel-helmets.
It is often stated, or implied, that the British steel helmet of the Great war, the so-called 'Brodie' bowler hat type, was the first to be introduced to the Western Front and that it was of a better design, and higher quality, than the French or German versions.

The French Adrian steel helmet, based on the French fireman's helmet 'La Bourguignotte', and named after the general in charge of army logistics who forcibly promoted its introduction, was definitely the first on the Western Front when it was introduced in the late summer of 1915 in time for the Champagne Offensive.
As regards its design, it is perhaps significant that some countries introduced similar models after 1920.
As for the quality, it is indubiably true that the British Brodie was for the most part - but not always - made from forged steel, whereas the other combattant nations used steel plate. Logically, the former should be more resistant to projectiles than the German and French; the more rounded profile of the British helmet was, perhaps, also advantageous. Whether the British helmet was the better shape to protect the lower part of the head and neck from such projectiles, is another matter
