Hartford688 -> A fulsome review... (5/25/2005 10:32:11 PM)

http://www.simhq.com/_land/land_019a.html

Thanks Tom for a well put together review (well I think so).

Tiornu -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/25/2005 10:38:43 PM)

Are you sure you mean "fulsome"?

Good point. One glass of wine too may tonight. Was looking something less bland than "good" or "interesting" etc.

Looks like I got carried away.

From dictionary.reference.com:

Usage note: Fulsome is often mistakenly used to mean "full; abundant; plenteous." Though it once had this meaning, now it always indicates that which is so excessive it causes offense or disgust.

New Shorter Oxford:

1. Abundant, plentiful; Full, copious, rich. Now rare.

Bill Bryson ("Troublesome words"):

"fulsome is one of the most frequently misapplied words in English..."

Ooops.

I was kind of aiming at full and rich, but missed the mark. The review really did not disgust me.

Evidently I am either:

a) bad at English
b) living in in the past
c) all of the above

Probably c. Embarrassing for someone who has too many dictionaries and English usage books.[:(]

Next I will be referring to my fleet being completely decimated.

But anyway, what did you think of the review?[:)]

Captain Cruft -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/25/2005 11:34:01 PM)

I thought it was a good balanced review aimed at what I would I describe as the "casual wargamer". It goes to great length to emphasise that the game is an extremely large undertaking for example. There isn't much detail on how you actually drive the thing which is probably a good idea ... ;)

CapAndGown -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/25/2005 11:42:58 PM)

Crap, I must be living in the past too. I guess I read too many old books.

Farfarer61 -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 12:27:09 AM)

Oxford Rules.

The opinions of barabarians who permit their language skills to degenerate to level of beasts huddled grunting in caves or in front of flatscreens are of no account. [:D]

pasternakski -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 12:46:20 AM)

"good balanced review"?

"barabarians"?

Let's do middle school language arts before we try to graduate to what Oxford's Mediocre New English Dictionary can teach.

Terminus -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 1:08:09 AM)

I promised myself I wouldn't do this...

Terminus -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 1:10:56 AM)

Ah, screw it...

Pasternakski, have you ever contributed anything to this forum that wasn't snide, condescending or a personal attack? Just wondering...

mogami -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 1:25:23 AM)

Hi, Pasternakski is sometimes the funniest person here. You have to always bear in mind that he is really Groucho Marx and not take him too serious. If he only directed his wit at certain people or times then you could make a case for it being personal but since he is like Triumph the Insult Dog and he does it to everyone and everything it's the readers fault if they let themselves take the insults personally. Be careful what you post, how you post because he is lurking looking for his next victum. But sometimes (and it is what makes it all worth while) he is really deep and quite funny. He is not out for just certain people. He wants to get all of us....to laugh
(If he was just into flaming there are better places to lurk, like AOL chat rooms)

Terminus -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 1:31:04 AM)

Yeah... I just never found Triumph the Insult Comedy Dog very funny, is all...

Farfarer61 -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 1:55:22 AM)

We are all funny...after all we play these games...[;)]

Ok, I will check my spelling.

It is just that I've become so lazy since I stopped using my manual typewriter and carbons last year.

No. Your point?

Terminus -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 3:19:51 AM)

No point... Just checking...

BrucePowers -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 3:58:32 AM)

I like reading Pasternaski. I have never felt he was attacking any one personally. No, I do not always agree with him but he does try to get every one involved.

BrucePowers -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 4:00:13 AM)

OOPS - I spelled Pasternakski wrong. Sorry.

TSCofield -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 4:11:37 AM)

People on these boards are weirder than on our own.

I didn't want to dive too deeply into the review, it would have gone on for 20 or 30 pages if I wanted to.

I wanted to do something that would be under six pages while at the same time giving a good look at the strong and weak points of the game. Players who want to play the game will really get into the nuances of the game when they pick it up. I could easily have gotten into 16 or 17 pages if I had tried.

Erik Rutins -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 4:22:31 AM)

Thanks Tom, it's a great review. Also enjoyed the reviews of Case Blue and The Last Days. Thanks to you and your staff for looking at our titles. [:)]

Regards,

- Erik

BrucePowers -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 4:23:32 AM)

I have not actually read a review of this game. I found out about MATRIX back just after UVs release when I was googling for a Pacific War computer game. I own this and UV I will probably buy War Plan Orange and Gary Grigsby's WAW. I do not play WiTP as much as I would like to (it does intimidate me a little). However, as I have said before this is the game I have been looking for since SPI's War in the Pacific. I really like it. It is a very good game. I have recommended it to my two serious wargaming friends. However, one of them is only using Macs right now. I am still working on the other one.

"What a company, boys and girls. Who else gives you free games that are top notch to start with and continuing support, both through staff-active forums and patch upgrades?

It's almost enough to make me want to give up my cynical attitude toward the human race, make amends with god, and live a life dedicated to truth, justice, and the American way.

NOT! " Pasternaski 8/1/2002 (PacWar) (He has always been this way)

pasternakski -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/26/2005 5:58:11 AM)

My blushes, Watson.

I can only say that I never intend anything personal by any of this mindless banter.

I'm just trying to have a little FUN on a forum dealing with GAMES - you know?

Every once in awhile, I even try to make a worthwhile contribution, although, to be honest with you, that seems less and less possible as time goes along.

Way back when, most people here (including me) took themselves way too seriously. there's still an element of that, but when I see it, I always stop, say "Yoicks," draw my trusty saber, and cut down a side street.

So here I am, stuck in fulsome prison...

It was New Shorter Oxford, by the way. Not New English Dictionary. Did you not read the posts properly? [:-] Very mediocre.

Alright... My apologies... Wasn't trying to be a wise guy (nyuck, nyuck, nyuck), but maybe, instead of being Groucho, you could be Harpo once in a while?

Umm, was trying to make a joke, see, it's humor, like. Did you read my post about not intending anything personal and trying to have some FUN?

At least you can spell midiacer.

Lol. You and every news anchor.

I'm just as bad, what do they call Fernando Po these days?

Edit - great review. Not without criticisms, but overall very positive with a nice description of how gameplay works.

Tiornu -> RE: A fulsome review... (5/27/2005 12:33:42 AM)

This is all my fault. I accept full responsibility for my actions. If I believed in smilies, I'd post one hanging at the end of a rope.
They don't have necks, do they...?

I could no more be Harpo than I could be Greta Garbo.
