Ursa MAior -> Bombardment missions through the Slot (5/27/2005 10:05:57 PM)

It well could be that this is not the right place to post this problem, but I think it is a bug rahter than my (existing) lack of experience. I play mission 17 Yamamoto's prophecy with the japanese. I have mined Lunga, hexes 39,39 and 39, 40. I have a TF with 5 cruisers and 5 destroyers set to patrol/react to enemy at Tuvau undocked (or in 39,39 depends). A group of Mavises patrolling from Shortland island and the allies keep bombarding Lunga without hitting any mines, encountering my TF or my patrol planes sighting them. Sometimes (cca 33% of the times). I see them depart, but never arrive. Even if teh TF is stationed in Lunga only the CD batteries can damage the allied ships.

It's a known bug....Bombardment TFs never hit mines.
I doubt it'll ever be fixed either....

Regarding your TFs not intercepting.....it seems to me this mostly depends on the commander of the TF. You want an aggressive commander for this purpose.
Tanaka is the best choice.

Mavis can't spot the Allied TF from Shortlands due to lack of range......the Allied ships are still too far out on the day before they make their night attack.
Try putting some AV ships and Emily or Mavis on Tulagi. (or anywhere for that matter....all they need are supplies).

McDuck -> RE: Bombardment missions through the Slot (5/28/2005 1:37:51 AM)

In my pbem ( scen 17 , 2.3 ) as the allies i've hit mines in hex 39 , 40 . I seem to remember reading in the manual that if you lay mines in a hex with a port or a/f of 1 or greater the mines will be sown to prevent an amphib invasion . but if the hex is still 0 / 0 the mines will be sown throughout the hex and dangerous to ships passing through . I mined Irau while still 0 / 0 and an ijn bombardment tf hit two mines on the way in . If you sow mines in a hex contolled by your opponent your ships are also at risk of hitting them . I've even hit my own mines in those shallow water hexes nne off of noumea - and it was a dm at that . How/ why sc tf's react is still a bit of a mystery other than the odds a of a scrap go up if the inbound tf has been well spotted . And they go waaaay up if you assign your sc tf the same destination hex as the inbound tf . Intercepting a tf in mid move is rare - usually only happens with retiring damaged ships . I hope this may have helped a bit . Regards ... McD

Thanks for the help.

Manula Page 24 Surface combat is detailing exactly the same situation (defendeing friendly base etc.) but in the game I cannot itercept/sight incooming bombardment TFs not to mention that even the Aoba Kinugasa cruisers carried some floatplanes for scouting missions.

Regards

Stiull no solution to intercept, but minde Lunga 3 times (2 subs and once with MLs) and hit 3!!!!!!!!!! ships. Plus added a heavy CD unit (1500 points +), topped with Nells on the island and thus sighting the incoming fleet. Succes!!!

Holy jeez I had no idea....!

Someone a long time ago said it was a bug so I just went with that...
Sorry for any confusion!
