CGSailor -> Waterlogged Aircraft Carrier (6/9/2005 1:49:02 PM)

In another thread I described how my CVTF took a severe thumping. I just managed to get the severely damaged Enterprise into Wunpoko at 4 kts with 67 systems, 88 flooding. Now that she's anchored, the flooding is slowly going down. She's at about 77 now.

My plan is to wait until the flooding is reduced to the point where she can make about 10 kts, which should be about enough to allow Enterprise to make the voyage to Luganville in one day. Once there she can go pierside to reduce the flooding to zero. Then I plan to move her to Noumea and then send her back to Pearl Harbor.

If the flooding is reduced to 50, do you think it would then be safe to make the run to Luganville? I'm thinking she's pretty exposed at Wunpoko. I've put in place an ASW patrol of 6 DD's, and probably need to LRCAP her until I can get her into Luganville.

Any words of wisdom?

Your CV should be OK to leave right now!
(OK, I'd probably wait until it got down to 60 float damage...just to be safe)

it's not that far to Luganville...

Unless, I am really fearfull of an enemy attack, I leave the carrier right where she is until flotation is down to zero or very low-depending on the risk. I know she will recover faster at a bigger port but one 24 inch Japanese torpedo might just sink a high sys-medium flotation damaged ship and this game is all about sinking carriers. Also, the speed of your task force determines the chance for a sucessful sub intercept and, I believe, the chance of a sucessful torpedo hit. Japanese subs are very good at sinking cripples. Best to have your ship in the best shape and up to its fastest possible speed before moving it. A smart japanese opponents is going to keep tabs on it and try to intercept it with subs when you go to move it. Lots of ASW aircraft in the area will help as well as a healthy escort, but remember your escort is only as fast as your crippled ship.
