Unless, I am really fearfull of an enemy attack, I leave the carrier right where she is until flotation is down to zero or very low-depending on the risk. I know she will recover faster at a bigger port but one 24 inch Japanese torpedo might just sink a high sys-medium flotation damaged ship and this game is all about sinking carriers. Also, the speed of your task force determines the chance for a sucessful sub intercept and, I believe, the chance of a sucessful torpedo hit. Japanese subs are very good at sinking cripples. Best to have your ship in the best shape and up to its fastest possible speed before moving it. A smart japanese opponents is going to keep tabs on it and try to intercept it with subs when you go to move it. Lots of ASW aircraft in the area will help as well as a healthy escort, but remember your escort is only as fast as your crippled ship.
