ShermCommander -> Upgraded to V4.0, now no sound (9/20/2000 9:20:00 AM)

Hello, I bought the latest PCGamer mag on a whim and it happened to include SpWaw on one of its CDs. I installed the game and played to my hearts content. Then I visited the SpWaw website and saw that the v4 upgrade was out, so I decided to download it. I installed it and everything seemed to be fine....except that most of the sounds are gone. I have no cannon/arty, heavy machine gun, airplane/glider, footsteps, tank/jeep/vehicle sounds. I'm pretty sure I followed the install instructions correctly. My hardware setup is as follows: AsusTek P3B Mobo Celeron 450 196Mb RAM Intel Pro 10/100+ NIC Promise Ultra 66 card 20GB U66 HD SB Live! Value Sound Card Adaptec AHA-2940AU SCSI adapter 9.2GB SCSI Drive Seagate DAT 4mm 4GB TDU SCSI Toshiba 12x SCSI CD-Rom drive I'm hoping someone can help. 8-) Thanks, ShermCommander

Hi Sherm... I'm not sure about this, but I thought I read a post that SB Live may not work with SPWAW. I'm going to assume I was mistaking on that and suggest the following.. Have you checked to make sure that all your sound devices are working without conflicts? I have had sounds that have worked just fine in some programs and in others not at all, due to resource conflicts. Check under volume controls and see if your wave devices are muted or set too low. Also, under audio properties, make sure the proper device is being used for wave playback and that all audio features are being used. Last of all... the sound card may not be compatible, have you tried upgrading the drivers for it? I hope you know what I'm talking about and can check each of those common things. Otherwise, you could try posting your original question to http://www.matrixgames.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001820.html and see if if anyone there can help. Just a quick note, I have an SB Live "Value Digital" and sound for me is just fine. I used the drivers that came with it, so I haven't tried updating them. My machine is very recent, thus my sound driver software is recent, so it still could be a driver problem you're having.

Thanks Ed... I bought a SB Live card a week ago and have not installed yet. I was concerned that it would affect the SPWAW sounds. So It's good to know that SB Live does work with SPWAW. ------------------ understanding requires patience Grok

Hello, I'd like to thank you for your advice. But unfortunately I've tried the newest SB Live drivers...no luck, same symptoms. I think I'm going to spend the time to download the Full 4.0 version and try it instead, or simply drop back to version 3.?? I was using before I upgraded(which worked flawlessly). Again, thank you! Sherm

Hello Sherm Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you do get the sound to work let me know. Good Luck! ------------------ understanding requires patience Grok

Look for a nested Steel Panthers World at War under teh original Steel Panthers World at War. There is a quirk in the installation routine that often produces this if you "browse" to the install directory... Just copy all the nested files "up one" to the same named folders in the original install directory and it should work. The problem with SB LIve is that for some reason some folks seem to get crashes tothe desktop on some sounds. We think wwe have a line on the problem (different file format) but why it affects some folks and not others is still a mystery...
