Heyho. Thought I'd ask you guys about a decent free Adware and Spyware application. Frag put me onto Irfranview which is brilliant so I thought I'd go with the experts.

Speedysteve -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 6:40:46 PM)

I think there are just 3 choices worth looking for:

#1
Ad-Aware

#2
SpyBot (Search & Destroy)

#3
New Miccrosoft tool

P.S.
I Use Ad-Aware for years now.

I use adaware as well and find it fine.

I also use spybot search and destory.

I run both programs once a week.

Titanwarrior89 -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 6:52:55 PM)

Lavasoft-adware 6.0 its not bad comes recommended and its free. My wife and i both use it. [:D] Easy to install and run.

jhdeerslayer -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 6:55:58 PM)

CounterSpy is much better IMHO then either Adware or Spybot. But in fact, spyware experts recommend you use 2-3 checkers anyway to overlap their coverage. I use the above three myself. PC World has had some excellent articles on Spyware checkers recently which is where I found CounterSpy and it having the highest catch rate.

tsimmonds -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 6:58:56 PM)

On this machine here at work I have both SpyBot Search and Destroy as well as SpywareBlaster. SpyBot S&D you run like anti-virus software whenever you want to scan for and blow away the bad stuff. SpywareBlaster is a kind of monitoring software, that acts a bit like a firewall does, intercepting the bad stuff and preventing it from installing to begin with. Since I installed SpywareBlaster, when I run SpyBot S&D it never finds any problems.

This is all great info guys. Once again the forum comes to the rescue of those encumbered by the great "field of ignorance".[8D][&o]

At the risk of showing my extreme ignorance, can someone explain what Adware and Spyware do for you? I assume it has to do with someone else using your computer via the internet connection?

Thanks!

Toast -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 7:15:45 PM)

I work part-time at Best Buy as a member of the Geek Squad and we have to use multiple applications in order to clean an infected machine. Ad-aware, Spybot and Spysweeper are our baisc tools but we also make heavy use of Hijack-This and CWShreader for the browser hijackers and SpyDcotor and the Microsoft and CA tools for particulalry bad infections. We also recommned our customers stop using IE and use Firefox instead to prevent further infections.

Nikademus -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 7:18:17 PM)

How is it better? (curious)

I use Adware6 , older machine has both Spybot and Adaware. Even had Hijack THIS! on it too. More the merrier.

Speedysteve -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 7:19:35 PM)

You can use them all without any conflict correct?

(Just forward planning for when I get Broadband connection at my flat)

What Ron is looking for is software to combat spyware.

Nikademus -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 7:26:09 PM)

sure. I run em one at a time. Sometimes Adaware, for example, will find something that Spybot missed or vice-versa. Spyware is worse than viruses in their proliferation. its a constant race between the latest updates and the latest 'ware.

Speedysteve -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 7:28:49 PM)

Cheers Nik. I may well download a couple of different one's then

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 7:40:33 PM)

Best anti-spyware, malware, and other cyber sh**: Linux or FreeBSD. Amen [:D] Microsoft is the virus/spyware itself. Live with it.

Terminus -> RE: Adware and Spyware (6/22/2005 7:41:47 PM)

Linux... HAH! Maybe in 10 or 12 years...

Before I got WITP, I never worried about malware at all. I had a Windows partition on my box but rarely used it. Maybe once a month or so for an odd game that I had an urge to play. Now, I boot the Windows partition at least once a day. Since I started PBEM, I actually had to start getting onto the Internet with Microsoft in control. Scary thought!

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Adware and Spyware (7/7/2005 3:47:46 PM)

Thanks again all![&o]

Brausepaul -> RE: Adware and Spyware (7/7/2005 4:47:33 PM)

As someone mentioned before: the best way not to get in contact with adware and spyware is NOT TO USE THE INTERNET EXPLORER and inform yourself about secure browsing in general.

Yamato hugger -> RE: Adware and Spyware (7/7/2005 5:41:27 PM)

I use Spybot, but I alsp pay (like 20-30 bucks a year) for Spysweeper. Sweeper catches a lot of the stuff that snuck by Spybot.

Its true. Use firefox in conjunction with whatever spybot type program you use. It doesnt work well in this forum, but everywhere else its fine [;)]

Quite right.Just install firefox(or anything else but IE,good antivirus+firewall & you're as secure as you can be.

Brausepaul -> RE: Adware and Spyware (7/7/2005 6:40:52 PM)

@ Yamato Hugger
What kind of problems do you have with this forum? And which FF version is in use? I use a customly built 1.04 and I don't notice any problems.

I just took your advice and downloaded Firefox lol. I run Spysweeper once a week, I havent used Spybot before though.

Warfare1 -> RE: Adware and Spyware (7/8/2005 8:56:29 AM)

Use over-lapping coverage.

Right now I am using Firefox, Ad-aware 6.0 (it's completely free and is updated at least once a week with an easy to use updater) and Spybot S&D.

Do NOT use Spybot on its own. Ad-aware consistently gets bugs that Spybot misses.

I run Ad-aware AND clean out my temp internet folder every time I log off the internet.

Zakhal -> RE: Adware and Spyware (7/8/2005 11:00:34 PM)

Just visited sister and checked her computer. 176 addware/troyans found. And of course the virus-soft cant remove not one of these (many of them in win folder).

Im really going to install linux for her next.

ilovestrategy -> RE: Adware and Spyware (7/9/2005 8:34:13 AM)

Ok, I'm using Firefox now. I like it. For spyware, I run spysweeper and Spybot.
