My apologies if this has been repeatedly answered, but a search yielded nothing.

How is unit experience modeled?

Ralegh -> RE: Experience (6/26/2005 7:58:36 PM)

a) Units surving combat get a little added to their morale - this helps militia grow up to be infantry (and irreg cav to reg cav, I suppose). Morale is an important determiner of how effective a unit is in combat. [Infantry can't grow into being Guards, though.]
b) Reinforcements 'dilute' unit morale - the morale of reinforcements depends on the age span you recruit for (default is 18 to 50, I think) and length of training. I often recuit 21 - 40 with 20 months training to get reinforcements with a morale of 4.7 - thats just the balance I tend to like.
c) Very large battles can cause the creation of a new general.

I think militia have to stay militia under this system. If I remember right, units that partcipate have a 50% chance to have a .05 morale increase. (This on a scale of roughly 1-10.)

Have you been getting enough new generals in the newer version, Steve? Or should I lower the threshold a bit more?

So basically, totally green troops are at only a very slight disadvantage against identical but highly experienced troops?

JosephL -> RE: Experience (6/26/2005 9:20:06 PM)

Hmm Green vs. Experienced?

In my playing the difference in experience is tremendous. Recently Sweden whooped an 100,000 unit prussian army with 50,000 well trained units.

My morale (avg) was like a 4.0 but that was nothing when compared to their average of 7.

Hehe - Eric is too deep in the details. I have had militia promoted to infantry Eric (and its NOT a bug!).

On Green v Experienced, I am with Joseph: morale of the unit is massivley important. Unit type is important too - particularly in determining capability - but morale is critical to changing formation as well as withstanding damage in combat. High morale troops win battles! [Thats why playing Turkey is sooo hard. The low morale hordes can wear your opponent down, but that usually means losing the first few battles.]

You can change your recruiting policies to have new recruits more experienced (and plain happier) when they are joining their units - I usually fiddle to change the default recruit morale of 2.95 to something like 4.7 (especially when playing Turkey!)

Uncle_Joe -> RE: Experience (6/27/2005 4:08:53 AM)

So that begs the question...why wouldnt you want to change recruitment such that you generally have happy, more capable recruits?

So far, I dont think I've ever run out of bodies for the replacement depots. [;)] I generally cut Age to 18-40 and up training to 20 or more months. This gives me better recruits with little downside that I've encountered so far (mostly with England, Spain, or occasionally Austria).

Ralegh -> RE: Experience (6/27/2005 5:54:20 AM)

Hehe - I go for 21 to 40 year olds.
It does reduce the draftable population, and hence give you less replacements. You could micro-manage this I suppose to give you a flood of reinforcements when you expect to need them... But I agree Uncle_Joe - quality is worth it!

le adder noir -> RE: Experience (6/27/2005 8:53:07 AM)

Hi all,

Just wondering if militia can be promoted into infantry with enough experience, does that mean infantry need a certain amount of experience to be promoted to the revered Imperial Guard. Im just trying wondering if Imperial Guard units are created by having verteran units survive battles or simply built.

Cheers

Ralegh -> RE: Experience (6/27/2005 9:10:10 AM)

No, you gotta be built as a guard unit to get their benefits - its not just more morale, its a different equipment outfitting, different uniforms, etc etc.

Similarly, more morale doesn't change light cavalry into heavy cavalry.

Naomi -> RE: Experience (6/27/2005 9:19:10 AM)

Urs questions ve been answered. Infantrymen can't be upgraded to guards (coz the former's morale top out at below 8, where guards' start at their formation) while, according to Ralegh, militia can be promoted.

Zan -> RE: Experience (6/29/2005 4:19:42 AM)

Can someone explain leader experience and what benefits those command stars give?What are the leader attributes and do they improve or gain new ones?
