Major General Alexander Vandegrift, commander of US 1st Marine Division at Guadalcanal, and later Commandant of the US Marine Corps from 1944-48.

Well I'll get nit picky and say that at the time of this portrait he was MAJOR General Alexander Vandegrift. I have seen this portrait before and I must say that I am not sure I have ever seen a prouder looking man.

He also looks like the last guy on earth you would want to box [:D]

BTW if anyone has never read a book on Guadalcanal you really need to, I read my first on the battle 2 years ago and it definatly gave me a new view on the battle and the men who gave everything there. [&o]
