I went back to the stock ATI drivers, Catalyst 5.6, and no change. The map display is fine until it...stops, and you can see a colored line, yellow then red, at the bottom of the displayed map area, and then just black. It's as if it cuts off and the graphic layer vanishes. The Plato MFC error I have no idea about, and it only happens on exit though I have no idea if it's related. EDIT: It works fine on my widescreen laptop, which has an Nvidia graphics GPU. While not conclusive, this suggests to me that there is an issue with ATI cards perhaps. Both machines use AMD CPUs for what it's worth. I would love to hear from other ATI users whether they have this issue or not. EDIT REDUX: Wo0T! Fixed it. The EuGame32_3.pcx file on my desktop was, somehow, corrupt--it was truncated. The one from the instal on my laptop, though reporting the same file size, was fine, and I simply recopied it back over the network to the desktop. How on EARTH the file was corrupt on one machine and not the other is beyond me--they came from the same installer, after all. But whatever, it works, and I'm happy.
