Phil -> Gaining Experience (8/8/2001 9:16:00 AM)

I've posted this question lately in the SPWAW forum with no replies, so thinking I posted in the wrong forum, I'll ask the question again here. Could someone who knows please respond, because it's really been something I don't understand. Anyway, I really want to know how a unit gains experience points. I realize that it's the last unit that inflicts damage that gets the points, but how much?? How can you tell how much a certain unit is worth? Obviously a sniper or jeep doesn't give as many points as a Panther tank. And if a unit is dispearsed, a kill is registered, but is it as many experience points as being destroyed? And how are leaders promoted? What is taken into account for that? And, how are experience points handled with regards to upgrades? And my killed or destroted units...... how are their experience points effected? This has just been one of those little things I can't figure out and has been somewhat frustrating. Thanks in advance.

Phil, I've seen your posts without answers so I thought that I would take the liberty of replying. I understand that you really want actual, code level criteria but these have never been announced. Perhaps Matrix will reply to you. The formula for the number of points gained has never been stated. If you really are interested, you could create a scenario with several instances of the same unit type at various experience levels then kill them one at a time then repeat with units of different costs. This would show the relationship between exp points gained and the cost/exp of the killed unit. I think that these are the two criteria used. Post your results if you do. We all like to see this kind of research. If you do a comprehensive enough job to show the relationship, I'd put it in the next version of my SPWaW tactics guide and attribute it to you.

From what I remember reading, a unit doesn't have to kill anything to gain experiance in a battle, just being there is enough to gain a chance at more experiance. Units under 80 experiance gain experiance faster than those over 80. Kill points (what you get for killing enemey units) are the same for a 1 man sniper unit or a 300 point Kingtiger. Kill points count for leaders promotion. Changing a unit on the upgrade screen is supposed to subtract 6 pts from experiance. One thing I noticed but have never seen mentioned was the effect of enemy fire. I had a British core that got plastered by Italian 305mm artillery for several battles in a row. The units that didn't get killed still seemed to lose experiance, whether this is from taking in replacements or just a result of getting creamed battle after battle, I don't know. thanks, John.

well, that i'll state comes from SP1 but i don't think much has changed since in the game... Green units usually gain experience by just being still alive at the end of a scenario. Using weapons also used to give units experience, and of course hitting/destroying a target. Elite units gain experience only when they get a kill and sometimes less than 1 XP per kill. For veterans it's something between both. I think the XP gained depend on the point cost/value of the unit you kill. So an Elite Tiger destroying a sniper probably won't get any XP for it, whereas killing a JS-II will certainly get some. Experience is awarded at the end of the scenario only. XPs are limited to 140. A 140 XP unit does not gain XP anymore. However it might be more difficult to achieve such elite status with WaW rather than in SP1/2. Did'nt campaign enough to say. Replacing a tank with undamaged crew should not alter experience. With damaged crews/infantries, i'm not sure. Think as long as the leader is alive XP should'nt be altered, since the XPkills are leader allocated. That means if your tank is slightly damaged but leader killed you may experience a great drop in XP because it will be replaced.
