godochaos -> Saxony Protectorate? (7/5/2005 9:34:44 PM)

France 1805 campaign
How do I get Saxony to where I can actually control their troops?
Is that what a protectorate is?

I thought that i send a diplomat to a minor country and then raise their goodwill and then they ask to become a protectorate, but i'm not to sure.

And while you are feeling generous about answering questions. I just defeated Russian and Austrian armies in an ugly slugfest in Styria (so viscious that 1 imperial guard division disbanded after taking horrendous losses). I would like to know whats the best way to kick Austria out of the war and get the most out of it? I'm laying seige to the capitol with Fire on walls and just sitting in Styria. Anything else I can do to make it go faster or be more favorable?

Send a diplomat and set his action to "Charm". You should also consider subsidizing them heavily (right-click on Saxony, mouse-over the "Saxony" option, and select the "Subsidize" option from the sub-menu.) If you see your flag appear over the territory, you're on the right track (but still may need to wait a while, even a long while, before they ask you to protect them.) But even then, if another country is competing for their influence, they might never ask you. You can use the Attitude option (right-click, mouse-over "Map", then select "Show Attitudes") to view an attitude pie-chart for the relative attitudes of a minor country.

That's a good way to do it.

It looks like I am on the right track then, I sent a diplomat and told him to "charm" Saxony. I can't afford to subsidize. I'm doing a good job of bankrupting the nation!

I'm reading the Ralegh guides and trying to work on my economy

thanks for the advice!

Mynok -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 12:44:13 AM)

They won't ask unless you are well ahead of all other nations in attitude. Put a diplomat in there (on Charm), then click to select the Saxony province, then click on the little button called Relations down in its info box at the bottom.

You'll see right away where you stand, but you have to have a diplomat.

Ralegh -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 2:10:39 AM)

Foring a surrender:
-the easy way: take their capital. It costs them horrendous morale each month until insurrectionists force them to surrender. Note that the surrenders are to people in a random order, so you might not be first.
- the hard way: take all their capitals.

Getting the most out of it:
You want to increase the VPs you get for the surrender, which lets you choose more terms. Become an empire. Build more diplomats. (Hmm - cant do those quicky!) I know: take some cities! Each one is great glory and gets you more VPs in the surrender.

I thought when you capture a Country's capitol, it was an instant surrender, that's what the manual says. Do you need to occupy all provinces of a multi-province Country?

Ralegh -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 9:42:57 AM)

I was talking about nations.
Youa re right, Arvinald - if you capture the capital of a multiprovince minor all its dependants become yours too.

kram -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 10:16:17 AM)

In my last game Lisbon, after 4 turns of siege, surrenders to my (as Spain), but Elvas is still a province of Portugal, is that normal? And apparently I can't maintain a continuous status of war with Portugal and I must declare war each two turns.
Thanks for your help.

Elvas should have became yours after you conquered Lisbon.

Needing to re-declare war usually means you have an adviser turned on who is making cease fires - do you have the diplomatic adviser going? If so, turn him off.

mogami -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 11:32:30 AM)

Hi, I just had Russia surrender to Sweden. I invaded Denmark (A Russian protectorate)
After a few months and many casualties Russia surrendered. However I gained no power over Denmark (I did get a nice chunk of change from Russia)
It now seems I am barred from further attacks on Denmark for the year of enforced peace I imposed on Russia as part of the settlement.
How could I have avoided this. Must I accept offers of surrender?

kram -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 11:33:05 AM)

I must check for the adviser, Thanks.

Russia surrendered to Sweden ? I have to think twice wether to buy this game if this is possible at all.

mogami -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 1:23:10 PM)

Hi, You have to understand. Surrender does not mean the end of a nation. It just means Russia decided to end a war with Sweden.
Depending on the war the victor gets a certain amount of points to use in terms. In this case Sweden was able to get 1 year enforced peace and some cash in exchange for ending the war. Russia was by no means hurt to any degree. At the time of their "surrender" to Sweden they were engaged in wars with Turkey, Prussia and Austria.
Peace with Sweden allowed them to redeploy troops and still maintained the protectorate with Denmark (Thwarting Sweden's war aims)

mogami -> Darn Britian and their money (7/6/2005 1:28:56 PM)

Hi, Well after being unable to use Sweden's military to aquire Demarks territory I sent my diplomat and began spending cash. (I thought I was spending a lot)
Sweden began at minus 36 to Denmark.
I had raised that to +180 finally getting ahead of Britian. When the varmits dropped 800 on Denmark. [X(] Now I'm at 185 and the Brits are at 750.
Back to the drawing broad. I'm going to figure out how to gain some land without getting clobbered or going broke.

sol_invictus -> RE: Darn Britian and their money (7/6/2005 6:02:30 PM)

I have had the same experience as kram, except with Denmark. I conquered Copenhagen and gained control of the province, but all the other provinces were still independent and we were at peace. I re-declared war and besieged Jutland but after one turn of siege, I was again at peace. I was absolutely sure I had no Advisors on but I will run through this scenario from a saved game to be sure. Even if the Diplomatic Advisor was on, shouldn't all of Denmark have reverted to my control upon the capturing of Copenhagen? It just seems that after my capture of Copenhagen, all of Denmark's other provinces went into some political netherworld. Eventually, after about six months of abortive attemps to besiege Jutland, the rump remains of Denmark became the Protectorate of France and of course I was paid a "friendly" vist by the Grande Armee.[&:] Seems to be a bug with multi-province Countries.

Yeah, I think we need clarification on this from Eric. I'm not sure this is the case. (It may make a difference whether it was a protectorate at the time of conquest or not.)

sol_invictus -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 10:40:19 PM)

In my case, Denmark was not a Protectorate at the time I captured Copenhagen; only about six turns after did it become a French Protectorate.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Saxony Protectorate? (7/6/2005 11:09:28 PM)

My war has been going strange

I was trying to make Poland and Denmark like me as France (Poland starts out likeing me)

I was doing well with Denmark, then Sweden got into the act, and was pouring some 500-700 bucks a month into it, so I dropped out a little, when I seen that they stopped paying, I would just go toss another 75 in, and the AI would come back and jack it up again, strange part, I was like 1000 points of being liked and Sweden was like 2600 !

then Sweden, DOW on Denmark, I threw a quick 150 bucks at them, and they turned around asked me to take em over :)

which of course, led to a nice litle war

the ODD part is I had Poland around 1600, while Russia being the only one joining in and they were around -800 when they started, it got it up to around 260 when all of a sudden, they ask Sweden to take them over ??????

of course, when Sweden gave up the fight, I got most of Poland in return :)

odd point to paying money for friends, just toss around 5 bucks here and there, and you can get the AI to get into a bidding war with you, but, just toss in 5 bucks, while they toss in 300-700 a month

got a kick out of one bidding war, when Spain and Sweden, both came to me, asking for money !
