Kimse123 -> Why am i not accumulating any money (7/13/2005 3:12:25 PM)

I have for the last 1½ years, not accumulated any money. I have not build anything, i have no treaty which gives money away, i have a surplus of money, why do they not accumulate?

This must be a bug.

I've uploaded the savegame renamed to txt, but it is a winrar packed file.

There is a limit on the amount of money you can have stockpiled (as there is on every resource). It's around 2000, I believe. Could this be the issue?

No bug.
We are all keenly awaiting a whitepaper on the economy, although Eric is now talking about clarification screens in a patch or soemthing.
Anyway, the cash on the Economic Adviser screen is before the impact of supply. (Upkeep is paid on all units or they disband. Supply is additional.)

You only have 2 depots (good - they are expensive), but you are paying for the supply of is it 3 or 4 armies? (The ones inthe area of the depot and the one one area away). If you kill the two depots and hit end turn, you have a profit of 32.

Its actually worse than just not having enough to accumulate gold - on the supply report it says that there wasn't enough gold to pay for welfare (it comes out of the budget second last, not at all like modern times); and not enough to pay for the draft, so no reinforcements are being distributed to your units. This would really hurt!

Why is your empire in this situation? You are playing a high feudal level Turkey (62), and playing like a nice person - all those levies are piling up, I assume. When you play a high feudal country, you need to spend those troops - get em killed off, or make sure they starve, or rent them out to other countries... Quite simply, your economy can't afford all those garrison and spare divisions you have. In fact, I am very impressed you got it so very large without the economy imploding. (1.2 million men under arms for anyone else who read this far - triple France!)

I'm holding off on the economic FAQ since I want to make some changes to the economic rules based on feedback from you guys, and also add some economic in-game help and at least one additional economic report. This for the second patch, I hope.

I always thought a better approach might be to "waste" 8% of all surplus inventories. Applying waste against stockpiles just make sense and things spoil (and excess money sitting around the house does tend to eventually disappear if it sits there long enough). By making it 8%, you essentially could never stockpile more than a year's supply and realistically you'd never get close to that level unless you were spending absolutely nothing. This seems like a better way of preventing excess inventory than the current 5x additional usage of consumables and it also prevents the current problem of suddenly consuming a huge amount and leaving you with too few to build a high level province improvement that you've been saving up for (just try to build a level 10 courthouse in a small country - it can't be done!) It keeps wool inventories from getting out of hand. It makes it much less advantageous to stockpile something and then ignore it for years (ever see what levels of wood or iron can be built up by Prussia before she launches into a war?). And finally, this would add back a bit more spoilage to offset some of the reduction from province improvements that will likely be added soon to help keep the economy on an even keel.
