nukkxx5058 -> Where do we stand in terms of TCP/IP games ? (7/22/2005 5:06:03 PM)

Did someone manage to successfully play CoG in TCP/IP ? (i'm not talking about LAN). So far, just Erik said it is working ... I'd like more feedback.

Please in your answer, just say if it worked and how many players were involved in the game and how many hours did you play and if there were crashes or other inconvenients.

If (like for me) it didn't work, please say it clearly too ... Because so far. I don't see lots of people playing TCP/IP despite the fact that the game is perfecly designed for the multiplauer game style !

So My answer : TCP/IP didn't work: impossible to connect to the server even with firewall OFF

Thanks.

I believe one of the game threads in opponents wanted has a success, with I believe 3 players playing. Looks like you might be limited to fast connection, but I would not mind trying a dialup game just to be sure.

Also the host had a static IP, which might have helped. It was funny to note that the organizer was never able to join the game.[:D] It also seems the chat function does not work once there are people ready to start. Make communication difficult. I can not speak for certain as I have yet to attempt a TCP/IP game.

I think this was the thread:

First time couldnt connect, second time around I turned off the firewall and it was game on - 3 players. Unfortunatly we ended up with two of us being unable to read chat from each other just from the host, who could "see" both of us. This is THE way to play this game IMHO... ooooo... 8 players all on line...[X(]

In terms of turn speed, it probably did not take much longer to play a turn than it does solo against the AI!

Great FUN!![:D]

I bet the first turn was painful! [;)]

I don't see why the first turn could have been painful ? because everybody had to do the same initial seetup. I think it takes upto 10-15 minutes maximum.

Well, the painfull point was to spend 3 hours to try to connect to the server unsuccesfully. And to re-do a try the next night and again, unsuccessfully :-(

That was very painfull....

The first turn didnt seem to take very long..... two of us waited for the third player (who had the most provinces) for maybe 2 mins, and spent it discussing plans[;)]

I really enjoyed!

Ian77. Was everyone on a high speed connection? I am curious if it will work with dial-up users, being one myself at the moment.

We should try for another tcp/ip game. I might be free Saturday night 8 pm (EDT). I have to check with some on line work but if they are not ready then I would be good to go.

Hi guys..

I have been waiting for an online game to pop up....I'd be up for one anytime this weekend...

West Coast U.S.A.

I'd even get up in the middle of the night to play some Europeans if that is what it takes....unless we need to wait for the first patch for more stability.

I played several turns with three other players. First one of them hosted and I connected fine through my firewall and router. I then hosted and they connected fine through my router and software firewall.

It was a good time. I haven't had time to do it again this past week though.

We have not tested on dialup. The largest chunk of data is not that large (about the size of a zipped save game file) but the protocol is confirmed UDP, and so is slowed down by the packet confirmations.
