Question

What happens when you place a allied sub in Japanese hex, and vice - versa.

Will the sub attack shipping in the hex ? or does it just sit there and burn fuel all day long.
And if any advantages to having a sub in the hex

One thing I can tell you is putting a sub in a Jap hex that has ASW will mean some sub losses. I find placing them in such a hex causes me to lose too many subs. Many more that the subs can make up in kills. I leave them a least 3 hexs from a port. In so doing, I suffer very few losses and still get kills as the ships leave port.

If you mean what happens when you place a sub in an enemy base hex then yes it will attack shipping. I don't know if there is an increased chance of detection for base hexes, but I guess not. It's dangerous enough to have subs in shallow water, even more when you are in the vicinity of an enemy base.

joey -> RE: Allied Submarines in Japanese Hexes (7/23/2005 4:26:06 AM)

If you sit in a base hex too long, you will find a ASW task force out to kill your sub. This usually leads to bad results for the sub.

Okay,
Are the chances greater of getting a hit while in the hex or is it the same if your outside the hex

joey -> RE: Allied Submarines in Japanese Hexes (7/23/2005 4:40:42 AM)

Speaking from experience, the odds of getting sunk in a Jap port hex are much greater than standing off a few hexes.

Halsey -> RE: Allied Submarines in Japanese Hexes (7/23/2005 4:54:05 AM)

Submarines in coastal hexes have a "much" greater chance of being detected.[;)]

Main "advantage" is that it probably makes the other player "mad" which might make him do something dumb ... main disadvantage is your odds of getting sunk go up quite a bit ... especially if you hang around more than one turn. And one further comment, if you want to lay mines there ( which the Allies often do ) then you have to go there ... and you might be able to play "rock, paper, siccors" if he has minesweepers - you can hang around and try to torpedo the minesweepers ... whereas his ASW vessels, might trip over the mines ! But be prepared to lose the boat, if you hang around.

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words! [:D]

AmiralLaurent -> RE: Allied Submarines in Japanese Hexes (7/23/2005 9:00:46 AM)

It is a bad idea to place submarines in enemy hexes. They are easier to detect by ships and far more easier to detect and attack by planes in my own experience.

Remember that ports with size 3 and more are immune to submarines attack. That means that the submarine in the hex will only attack ships entering the hex (and maybe leaving) during the movement phase. It won't attack during the combat phase.

Submarines are far more efficient if they are not seen before they attack so having them placed some hexes away from enemy bases (and potential ASW aircraft) is increasing their efficiency.

However .... if you want to lay mines in an enemy port .. as the Allies often want to do ... then you absolutely must .. place submarines in enemy hexes ... so it is absolutely not an absolute not to place submarines in enemy hexes !!!

Agreed, but once the mines are laid it's not a good idea to loiter in the hex too long. [:D]

A sub that keeps moving is a sub that keeps living...

That is sort of how it is done. In one place too long and you may be in that place forever.

Feinder -> RE: Allied Submarines in Japanese Hexes (7/23/2005 5:28:56 PM)

Stay in deep water.

For the Allies, it makes it much harder for Japan to kill your subs (because you have lots of room to dive).

For Japan, it basicallly just means you have about 4 more minutes to get right with your ancestors before you hit crush depth.

I agree with joey. If you place them To close, their dead. So i move them out aways but not too far. I try to stay in the shipping lanes.[:)]

I agree with Joey. I like places them out too keep the losses down.

Alrighty then, So I quess we will not be placing submarines in enemy hexes. Unless mining or i dont like the co of the sub :)

Thanks for the answers gentleman...

bradfordkay -> RE: Allied Submarines in Japanese Hexes (7/24/2005 7:20:27 AM)

My minelaying subs are far too valuable to risk hanging around any enemy port. They go in there, leave their calling cards, and skedadle home. If they happen to run into any enemy shipping en route, I'll hold my breath. Otherwise, the nuisance factor of seeding various ports is just too enjoyable to risk using those guys as hunters.

It has the added side benefit of scattering enemy MSW's too, such that their offensives suffer somewhat if they're worried about keeping the ports free of mines.
