Bodhi -> Multinational task forces? (7/24/2005 1:09:07 PM)

Any any idea how task forces made up from ships of more than one nation work?

I've just had two separate multinational TFs, one a mine warfare and one a transport, both of which were subdivided when they got to the nearest major port to their final destinations. In both cases the original TF commander was also a commander of one of the ships in the TF. (Probably incidental, but both TF commanders were the ship captains of US Navy vessels, even though the majority of ships in both TFs weren't US Navy).

After sub-dividing, all the new TFs still had the same TF commander as the original TF, even though he was still both the ship commander and TF commander in the now single ship US Navy TF. Luckily there weren't any loses in these operations, but has anyone any idea what would have happened to the TF commanders if the US Navy ship with the orginal commander had been gone down with his ship, or conversely what would have happened to the US Navy single ship TF if one of the other single ship TFs commander had been lost?

This is obviously indicative of the American-centric bias in world of Corporate America. The programmers are plants of the CIA and/or military/industrial complex.

A true multi-national task force would should have had a leader, chosen after much debate among a committee of representatives of the contributors, resulting in a leader chosen from the most feeble contributor to the war - perhaps the father or grandfather of Kofi Anan............[:D]

We've seen this one - we call it the "cloning bug" ... I've got several Japanese subs that travelled to the battle zone in 1 TF ( I was lazy ) but split apart after arriving ... now I have them all commanded by
LCDR Lopez, P ... fortuntately all the Lopez brothers are 77 leadership 88 initiative .. and they sink ships ... so I'm not complaining !!! But haven't found out yet ... what happens if they get sunk ... and the real ship they ( he ) are riding on ( if any ) is probably a MSW in San Diego ... so hopefully they ( he ) are nice and safe ! But I don't think it has to do with more than one nation.

I can't say anything intelligent about how flagships are chosen, but I'm sure the bug you encountered has nothing to do with multinational TFs. I guess it's the same bug I reported a while ago.
The problem is when you split up a TF in new TF1 (the one that keeps the old TF number) and new TF2 nothing at all is changed for TF1 including the TF commander even if he was a ship captain of a ship that is now in TF2. Now when the cloned Captain/Commander dies in one of the new TFs he will be replaced by a Jap in the other TF.
You could have used the workaround to keep the USN flagship in the old TF (resp. TF1) and split away all the other ships into TF2. TF2 will get the new flagship's captain as TF commander. Of course this workaround will not work if the AI routine splits up TFs during turn resolution.
This is also no problem when the TF commander comes from the leader pool because then TF1 will keep him and TF2 gets a ship captain as commander.

EUBanana -> RE: Multinational task forces? (7/24/2005 5:35:10 PM)

I think it works on the biggest and baddest ship assuming command.

I had BC Repulse along with about a dozen USN ships, the TF was British even though Repulse was the only British ship present.

Similarly in those Anglo-American air combat TFs I am so partial to, they always seem to end up with a British commander. I assume it goes on durability, which makes Formidable bigger and badder than Enterprise. [;)]

This is actually bad, as the USN has the best commanders.

Terminus -> RE: Multinational task forces? (7/24/2005 5:55:45 PM)

I think I read somewhere on the forum that flagships are decided by the ship's number in the database, and that the one with the lowest number automagically becomes flag.

Sonny -> RE: Multinational task forces? (7/24/2005 6:12:54 PM)

I had a somewhat opposite thing happen to my subs. They sailed together from Pearl and split up when they got to Japanese waters. Didn't pay much attention for a couple turns when I noticed that they did not seem to be shooting at enemy ships. Check and they were commanded by the boats cook or other such lowly character. Had to send them back to Midway to get some officers aboard.[:@]

I don't think that this is true: If you create a new TF composed only of destroyers, it seems that always the captain of the last ship chosen becomes commander of that TF. Otherwise it seems that always the captain of the biggest ship involves assumes command. Thus, if you create a TF with 4 CA and 4 DD (just as example), the captain of the CA chosen last in the creation screen will become commander of that TF.

Yeah, Lopez is quite a common Japanese surname. Long tradition of naval service in that family...[sm=dizzy.gif]
