Oznoyng -> Mine Warfare (8/4/2005 10:37:22 PM)

I am interested in strategies, tips, thoughts, etc. about employing minelayers as Japan. For the moment, they are the forgotten force in my planning, mostly because I do not yet have a clear picture of how I should/could use them. Anyone care to help me improve this aspect of my game?

Mike Solli -> RE: Mine Warfare (8/4/2005 11:24:40 PM)

I group my minelayers around the map and use them primarily to mine my own bases. I mine the ones I suspect the enemy is going to visit. I also will use them (and minelaying subs) to leave little presents in shallow choke points that I suspect the enemy is using.

I use my minelaying subs to leave little presents in enemy bases, almost at random, just to drive the Allied player nuts.

Try laying mines in the channel NW of Singapore - that will annoy the Allied player. Anything trying to get to Coloumbo will have to run them.

Use em on the surprise turn to leave a few nasty surprises at key Allied positions. [:D]

My favourites :-

Rabaul
Canton Island
Java Sea area, south of Singapore or off the north coast of Borneo
Chokepoints in the PI

I -love- minelayers on both sides, and the Japs have quite a few of them, unfortunately not so many with decent range.

Blam0 mined the approaches to Manila but paid dearly for it from the guns at Battan. He lost I tink 7 or 8 MLs.
I'm still cleaning them out and had a couple of ships hit them and damaged the pretty bad.

Put an MLE at Kwaj, keep it stocked with supply and fuel, send a dozen ML to do the work, and before long you can have the whole Marshalls mined wall to wall. Same thing works in the Solomons, Marianas, Carolines, Philippines, DEI, Ceylon, wherever. Mine the bases at the front line and pull back in front of the Allied advance. You can easily put 3000 mines anyplace important in very short order.

I do much like irrelevant does. Make it harder for the enemy to bombard and invade your islands :)

Minefileds don't prevent BB bombardments. Haven't seen CA, CL. DDs are vulnerable. Landing party suffers a lot.

My IJN opponent lost around 15 APs at Port Blair. 3 weeks later the base is still a bad place to visit, because i interdict all minesweeping attempts from my base at Rangoon.

Bombardment runs don't seem to hit mines anymore ( used to in UV ) may be due to escorts no longer getting within range, got 3000+ mines at Lunga and Tuliga and the only ships to hit them have been the allied AI's transport and msw on and Yamato.....[sm=00000959.gif][sm=00000023.gif].

Gona be an long trip home and and even longer repair Job but she but done at least 4 allied BB so musn't grumble. Bloody mines... + several 16" & 14" rifles make a mess.

The Dude -> RE: Mine Warfare (8/25/2005 6:12:21 AM)

Use the three SS MLs to mine major ports like SF and PH.

I like to group my MLs with some range into one large flotilla. I base them and an MLE or two at Rangoon and under cover of air (Akyab or the three Taiyos work perfctly) I mine Diamond, Chandpur Madras, and the two ports in Ceylon. It can be difficult to accomplish and may seem to be a waste of resources but it pays off to have those ports blocked even for a couple turns. This way allows you to lay thousands of mines in one pop which can take awaile to clear. This also has the side benefit of diverting allied air from the front to hitting your cap wall. I've shot down sometimes 200 planes during one of these missions.

It also affects the burma front more directly than if it is done somewhere else like in the SWPAC area.
