Tankerace -> War Plan Orange AI vs AI AAR (8/10/2005 5:14:53 AM)

Since there was some talk as a mod as to how the AI would handle WPO, the beta team has been very busy answering that, and I have created some AI modules for it. So, while this is from an earlier build, here is a 2 month AI vs AI AAR, with no human involvement. Its still being tweaked, but so far I and the testers are very pleased.

So, the 2 month AI vs AI AAR of the 1922 campaign:

Ian R -> RE: War Plan Orange AI vs AI AAR (8/10/2005 10:22:47 AM)

Tankerace,

has there been any biplane air strike activity ? In particular, against any big ships?

or is the air stuff a different beta test?

Tankerace -> RE: War Plan Orange AI vs AI AAR (8/10/2005 10:27:21 AM)

So far, the only air strike that has been recorded (remember, Airfields have to be built first) was when the Japanese AI put a raiding task force in Hawaii. They didn't attack the ships, as the AI had only recently deployed two squadrons to Pearl.

Air attacks probably won't happen in an AI game until later in the gamr, as airfields must first be built in the outlying bases of the Pacific. However, putting some bombers at Pearl under naval attack might not be a bad idea. Right now (early on), the action is confined to land and naval battles in the Philippines. In the 1926 campaigns, aircraft enter the frey, as in late 1922 (after the start of the game) a squadron of DH-4s was sent to Clark Field. I'll see if I can't get some good air to air battle screens and AARs for you.

Ian R -> RE: War Plan Orange AI vs AI AAR (8/10/2005 11:41:43 AM)

Thanx

I am particularly interested to see how you have handled air dropped torpedos (if they are in there at all). What has stirred my interest is reading these comments (which come off the net and so are to my mind suspect and require some confirmation):

"Early U.S. Torpedo Bombers

Shortly after the end of the First World War, the development of reliable aircraft engines of 400 to 600-horsepower and refinements in torpedo designs produced the first operational torpedo bombers. In the U.S., these included the single-engine Douglas DT and the twin-engine T2D float planes. By the late 1920s and early 1930s, the U.S. Navy was equipped with Martin T3M and T4M biplane torpedo bombers capable of operation on floats from the water, or fitted with wheels, from the decks of aircraft carriers. The Great Lakes Company also produced a variant of Martin’s T4M design for the Navy....Aerial torpedoes had an effective range of less than 2,000 yards and carried an explosive warhead smaller than standard torpedoes. A successful attack required that the torpedo be dropped no farther than 1,000 yards from the target ship"

and

"The Mk13 was to a large part responsible for the disaster that befell the U.S. torpedo bombers at Midway. It was the air-dropped part of the Mk-13/-14/-15 torpedo family, and shared many of the defects of that family, plus having some of its own.

It was begun in the 1920s but design progress was slow and interrupted, and it took its time to enter service with the fleet. One of the reasons was that in the early 1930s, the torpedo-bomber had come to be doubted as a useful weapon in the fleet, another the heavy weight of the Mk13. But by the mid-1930s, design continued, and by 1938, the weapon could be fielded.
Its primary deficit was the requirements it forced upon the launching plane for a successful drop - 110 knots speed in fifty feet height. It was a difficult requirement to fulfill under good conditions but in combat, it meant certain death. The major other defect was a tendency to run deep if it did at all commence running all right, which did make a successful attack all the more dependent on luck. "

But then if you read here: http://www.forcez-survivors.org.uk/pilot.html the description, which is probably of dropping a type 91/1 or /2, suggests drops made at less at 20-50 metres and range than 600m anyway in 1941.

Tankerace -> RE: War Plan Orange AI vs AI AAR (8/10/2005 11:49:18 AM)

There are seven torpedo bombers in the game, six being carrier borne.

The British Sopwith Cuckoo, which uses the 18in Mk VIII Torpedo,
The American Martin SC-1, T3M, and T4M, which all use the 18in Mk 6 Torpedo,
and the Japanese Mitsubishi B1M1 and B1M2, which use generic 45cm (17.7in) torpedoes.

In addition, the American Martin SC-2 is an improved float version of the SC-1, and also uses the 18in Mk 6 Torpedo.

As these torpedoes are the same or similar to their shipborne bretheren, they can travel a good range (5-8,000 yards), but because of their speed, only experienced pilots who drop them at a closer range will score a hit.

I did this because history has shown that in World War I, torpedoes were often fired far beyond what we would consider effective range, and it is quite probable that inexperienced carrier pilots would do the same.

Ian R -> RE: War Plan Orange AI vs AI AAR (8/10/2005 12:22:46 PM)

quote:

Noted with interest. That seems to accord with what the ex IJN fellow said in his interrogation. Looks like I'll be forced to part with some money!

???? ummm where did the Hiryu and Shokaku come from in 1929?

Tankerace -> RE: War Plan Orange AI vs AI AAR (8/16/2005 6:23:29 AM)

Two things. First off Shokaku was Hosho's sister, scrapped before completion thanks to the Washington Treaty.

Second, WPO planners, and even Japanese planners decided that if war broke out, Liners would have to be converted to carriers. So, to represent this, Japan in 1928-29 receives 2 additional Hosho style ships (Hiryu and Soryu) whereas the US receives two converted carriers, Enterprise and Yorktown. The plans to convert the carriers were there, so I just used the next names in the historical lineage.

The Japanese ships are pretty identical to Hosho, while the American ships are faster than Langley, but can't carry as many aircraft. (23 knots and 22 planes vs 15 knots and 33 planes)
